Well, I've been using the ol' fashioned mic+amp combination to record, however, my mic has gone bad and it no longer picks up much sound, even with the volume cranked to an 11.
In short, I need a quick way to set up my amp directly into the back of my cpu. I don't have a headphone jack equipped on my amp nor do I have a line out. I do, however, have an extension speaker jack along with an effects send and return.
Been needing to record a few things to improv with =\.

Hmm, I think the FX send will work. You may have to buy a little adapter for a few bucks at radioshack. (the adapter is for 1/4" to 1/8" so your 1/4" guitar cord can go into the line in of your computer (unless you have a good sound card with 1/4" inputs, then you can just go straight from FX send to the soundcard)

Someone else on another forum suggested this and it didn't work. We hooked the effects send directly up to some headphones to see if it was sending ANY sound, but the headphones worked as a mic O_o.

WTF????
How'd that work?
I'd say get an amp with a line out. The next best solution would be to buy a real mike, and get some kind of equipment that'll run it and send it directly into your computer. Though, if you just wanted clean, you could hook directly up to the computer.

Both speakers and mic's act in the same way. Both are moving diaphragms *sp*. If you hook a speaker into a mic input and yelled loud enough, it would get a similar result to a mic.
Try this out: Hook your headphones up to the input jack of your amp and talk into the headphones.

I heard McCartney used a 15" bass speaker as a bass microphone back in the old days. They clamped the loose speaker to the front of his bass amp's speaker and used the signal from that into the board. It seemed to work okay.
A RadioShack mic might do, or if you have a piezo transducer (acoustic guitar pickup) you could stick that on the box somewhere - or inside - and see if that works.
The effects loop doesn't work? When you have the Send plugged into the computer, do you have the effect level on the amp's effects channel turned up? You should be able to adjust the volume there because it's a mix between wet/dry and is basically a level for the effect.
Let us know how it goes.

Doesn't work. All sound is canceled out whenever I plug anything into the effects send (sense there's no return) and no sound is put out. When I plug my headphones in, one of the headphones acts like an uber-mic.
I got excited when you said that as it makes sense, however, I cried when nothing was produced =\.
Thanks though.

Have you tried a 'dummy' plug in the Return jack? Just stick one in there and see if it works. One with no wires soldered on.
Probably won't work but try it out. :)

A Crate GLX212. Never tried direct recording before with this amp. I'll give the idea you suggested a try tommorow.

do you have a pedal...if so just line your guitar through that and the output from the pedal direct into where you were plugging the mic. and if you want to hear yourself use headphones from the pedal or just know how it sounds
