I was going to say Kirk Hammett, but now I re-evaluate the way I play, it's Satriani

Hampster was a Satch student...but i'm sure you knew that already...that being the case don't you find it odd how much their playing styles differ? and yet again how much they are similar?
maybe its just me.

yeah, I get you man
I mean, the thing about them, is that they both play solos that fit their songs. But hammett has way less technique and melodic structure in his solos. That's the way I look at it.

exactly...i'm not a big metallica fan by any means (not any more at least)...but damn Hampster sure has managed to hop into a band that can arrange a song for commercial appeal and make a load of cash plus gain more recognition than ol satch....kinda pathetic i think...opinion only of course.

well here's where I disagree with ya, lol. These guys had no air play for any of their earlier albums, and managed to gain a huge fan base. But my opinion of hammet differs from my opinion of metallica. I think he needs a huge wake up call with his playing, and actually decide to get better.

two things se77en:
1.did you com up with Hampster as a nickname for Hammett on your own
2.what Satch are you talking about because today at school (hated school) my stupid way too technical english teacher made us anylyze some poem called "To Satch" which was about the old pitcher Satchel Page from the 50's and 60's.
smfulla
04-29-2002, 07:31 PM
Lol, about the second question, we're talking about Joe Satriani. The guy who made Satch Boogie. The guy who taught steve vai, and Hammett and other guys.

Blood...no...i was in a band a few years ago that decided to "change" styles...needless to say i didn't like the idea of being a Metallica copy so i quit...two days later i saw an ad posted by the band looking for a guitarist they described as "Kirk Hampster"...lol...

Gibby:
indeed i have heard of a few from your list, in fact im currently into Al DiMieola as a real source of inspiration, some of his stuff is mindblowing.
Personally however, my most influential musician has to be Paul Kossoff from Free - The world will never again hear vibrato of that quality :)

that's pretty wierd se77en. never knew a band would want to name themselves after a guitararist name with a twist.
BlackStar, why do you say Kirk Hammett sucks if he's better than you. Kirk Hammett is better than pretty much everyone here and is recognized for it across the world. what's your name, im pretty sure that i havnt heard any guys at guitar shops or other forums talking about your awesome soloing lately.
o and sologod, which SkidRow are you talking about. because SkidRow was the name that Nirvana played under for a few of their Northwest gigs until they found out that there was another band that already had the name SkidRow.
i have to disagree with you there
there is unrecognised talent everywhere.
BloodXero
04-30-2002, 08:26 PM
ya i know that. i havent heard him play but he shouldnt be dissing people that do get recognition for their awesome playing.
Yea, i like most of kirks solo - one still blows me away, being my fave metallica song and all. but you have to admit, that the solos from the black album onwards have been slow, a little on the slow, and boring to listen to side of things, showing less and less ability with each album. And of course he is getting older, so i think we ought to be referring to his skills in his heyday if you will..

I haven't heard of any of these. Who are they? What type of music do they play? I'm always intersted in trying something new. (or old, as the case may be)
55'gibby
04-30-2002, 10:18 PM
mostly old in this case...
Johnny Winter... Texas Blues Great (SRV took over his old band)
Lowell George... Leader of the band Little Feat (blues) great slide player
David Bromberg.. Great all around plays all types from bluegrass to jazz
Al DiMeiola... Flaminco and jazz master (unGodly speed with feeling)
Roy Bucannan.. blues master, can make a guitar cry and sing
Andre Segovia.. Greatest classical guitarist ever (willing to argue this point)
Lee Ritenour... Great Jazz guitarist/composer really nice feel
Larry Coryell... see above (just a little better guitarist IMHO)
Leo Kottke.... The Master of the 12 string (jazz/folk mix)
If I could recommend just one piece to listen to.. Al DiMeiola, "Mediterranian Sundance" of the "One Night in San Francisco" CD... guitar playing that make the hair on my neck stand up... an acoustic flaminco piece, the runs alone blow me away, I can't phathom playing like that... AMAZING to say the least, just flaminco isn't everyones cup of tea..

Gibby, I know a few of those people. I know of Andre Segovia, Duane Allman, Bonnie Raitt, and Muddy is muddy walker right?
fizz... you say we should refer to his (hammett's) skills in his heyday? You realise he still plays all his old solos... so his skills havent changed... it's just he doesn't use them now, heh

ya i know. the only metallica albums i listen to are kill em all, ride the lightning, master of puppets, and ...and justice for all. in other words from their self-titled(black) on forward in time suck pretty bad. but truly the only albums hammett soloed on that are good are ride the lightning through ...and justice for all. the reason is when metallica recorded kill em all dave mustaine was still their lead guitarist so his solos were on the album even though he told them not to put it on there (yes, metallica was a sell-out band from the beginning. but even though kirk's recent solos have been crappy that doesnt mean that hes not an awesome player. get it?

Hmmm most inspiring songwriter/player... I can't really say. I'm inspired by all musicians even if they aren't "known" all over the world or in certain areas where every "talented" player is known.
But I'd have to say Kurt C., he was a great songwriter. Not the brightest guitarist but a major influence on guitarist all-around. Since he never used any "special" effects and just had a clean-cut all out real band without stealing another writers tunes/lyrics and making them as his own. The only thing I hate is when ppl say things about Kurt and say he can't play blah blah and compare him to another guitarist and besides a majority of ppl I have known or talked to only know Nirvana from Nevermind, I'm more into there bleach and b-sides then there other albums.

My influences are:
John Petrucci
Tony Macalpine
Jani Liimatainen
Ynqwie Malmsteen
Micheal Angelo
John Sykes
Jason Becker
Joe Satriani
But my playing style is almost exclusively along the same lines of John Petrucci, Jani Liimatainen, and Tony Macalpine

Does anyone remember Ritchie Blackmore? After all Satriani grew up listening to Deep Purple(Satch said so in a interview)...And Malmsteen is a Blackmore clone(no offence meant..Everyone says that)
And then Tony Iommi....The existence of Metallica and pretty much metal is thanks to this man's stunning riffage(ok..some people say Led Zep created metal...I don't think that's any true)
And then Rory Gallagher..WHo can produce those stunning blues ballads like he did?
And then Eric Johnson...I don't think anyone can play the guitar as smooth and fast as he does(What a fantastic guitar tone!)....

Blood Xero. Hammett recorded his own solos on Kill 'em All. This is one thing alot of 'tallica fans don't know. But if you've heard them before they put it out, you'll see mustaine's solos are alot different.
btw, iommi... have you heard Frank Gambale? He's on the favoured nation label, like Johnson. MAN! Gambale is an AWESOME fusion guitarist, and rock guitarist. You should check him out if you like Johnson

SONGWRITING: Definately gotta few fav's there: Paul Maccartney, John Lennon, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson(believe it or not), whoever wrote for Led Zeppelin, Steven Tyler/Joe Perry, this list goes on too...

Interesting that you included Stevie Wonder. I agree 100%, it's just not often that I've seen a non-guitarist listed in anyone's "favourite whatever" lists here. I think he's a genius, personally, even though I'm not a huge fan of his, he obviously has a ton of talent.

they were pretty much his solos. Hammett took dave' solos and slightly restructured them. He didn do any original writeing on that album. Just little improvistations **** i cnt spell.

Hendrix influenced me the most of anyone, not because hes uber technical or complicated (his solos really arent complicated compared to Page or Clapton) but because he plays with more feeling than most guitarists. He also brought on so much change to the blues/rock world.
SRV
Johnny Winter
BB King
Charlie Christian
Chuck Berry
Jimmy page
Coltrane(i went through a phse trying to learn all his parts on a guitar)
Pete Townsend
Cobain in his songwriting, his guitar was nothing to brag about(although i think he did it because he thought it was funny, not because he couldnt play well)
Jethro Tull
Muddy Waters
The list goes on forever so id better stop.

George Lynch
Jimmy Page
Eddie Van Halen
Angus Young
