I'm wondering if there are any kinds of techniques i could use on a solo for Shaft, which is obviously like a bright rock/funk song.

You could get a wah pedel and use it to go "chicka-wacka chicka-wacka" like all those 70s movie sound tracks. ;)
There are many techniques used in funk bass playing which can be transplanted to the guitar. For example, funk bass players often "pop" the strings between the thumb and forefinger - the way Mark Knopfler plays his guitar on fast runs- use this to get a hollow sound.
You can also do a thing that funk bassists do, I forget what it's called but you strike the string with the ball of you hand instead of a plectrum or you finger, this can take the edge of riffs that use the low end of the guitar. Also try strumming single notes on fast runs to add flaour to it.

are you refering to slap? cos that doenst work to well on a guitar.
As you said however, pop does. in some of my bands funkier songs we use alot of pop guitar and it works wonders :)

didn't know it was called slap, is that the thing that heavy metal bassists do, y'know, when the drum hits the snare, the bassist plays a muted note, it gives more kick.
You can sort of slap the guitar, if you hit the string with the knuckle of your thumb, but it's not that good.

hmm slap is a funk technique which adds more of a metallicy 'click' to the notes, doesnt mute them really.
hmm im confused.
Although saying that im a funk bassist eally, not exactly up on my metal techniques

I find playing funk guitar lies more in the tone and chords. Funk always sounds really cool on single coil pickups especially when you got a wha, it gives the trademark sound. Yeah as for funk bass and guitar the only thing you can really do on guitar is pop. Funk bass needs a flurry of notes with a lot of pops and slaps and "punch tone" While funk guitar is a lot of times a few chords that are played very fast and hard with a wah for that (in the words of firebird) "chicka-wacka chicka-wacka" sound

WHAGA WHAGA WHOOOOAAAAAAAM!! TUDU DUDU DUDUUUU!!!!
What good -that type of- bands do you know? Rage Against The Machine got something like that in some songs and ofcourse RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS!!! BLOOD SUGAR SEX MAGIC is the masta' album! I don't really know anything else, except one band that we got in Finland.
What is this pop thing you are talking about? Is it the thing where you hit with your palm to the bottom of strings and use thumb somehow. I don't know how it is done but I've seen some bands doing it.
ps. If you have came up some funky riffs check this out: http://www.guitarlodge.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=&threadid=3175
