Hello,
I have been tryin to play some Satriani songs..I find some of his techniques to be unbelievable(I can't play it..that's why ;) )
How does he play this

e |-------9b10==(9)r(9)b10==(9)r(9)p7----|
b |-----------------------------------10-|

e |--7------------------------------------|
b |-----10p8p==7--------------------------|
g |--------------9p=7s6h7h==9-(9)p7p6s4h7-|

g |-(7)p6p4---4-----------4-------------|
d |---------7---7p5p4h5h7---7p5p4-------|
a |-------------------------------h7-5p-|

He plays all the three things continuously one after the other at a reasonable pace(148 bpm,3/4 time) and the above constitute 3 measures (always with me always with u is the song)

(= - hold bend; also acts as connecting device for hammers/pulls)

the second part is especially tricky..He pulls off..slides...hammers on with just one pickin?

I would really like to play this song....

P.S Someone please ask Satriani to write songs which i can play :)

this is off the song Always With Me, Always With You
That part is very tricky... at first. But it is VERY easy once you know how he does it and if you've practiced licks like it before. It's basically all legato. Just hammer on and pull-off everything practically. Where ever it doesn't say h or p, then pick it. But you'll find its very seldom in that particular lick. You've gotta be well trained with your left hand

Btw satriani's new album is coming out in June... so maybe you could ask him on the next albums =]

just practice it a little at a time, when playing licks like these keep your thumb in the back, and use your pinky. (alot of beginners forget they have 4 fingers to use, not just 3).

PS: I asked Joe and he said that he will write a song that you can play.

oh and this was the first satch song i ever learned to, it's a great tune.

Like is there any site which focusses on this kind of playing?Place where i can get exercises of this kind goin...

@ Blackstar : I play with 4 fingers..I didn't keep my thumb behind the neck..coz i felt i could stretch and usually change my position only if i am to play wwith my 4th finger on the 5th and 6th strings..But if Someone who's played Satriani's songs says i should keep my thumb behind the neck..I will do so :)

Gee...If Satriani writes songs i can play..then i guess no one will buy his record :)

haha, well iommi, i don't think the record will be THAT bad, haha :)

but yeah dude, keep your thumb behind the neck when doin these sorts of runs, you will find that if you watch satch, and all the other shred dudes, they keep their hand in that position when they're playing those runs. You will ahve more of a stretch with your fingers man, unless your hands are HUGE, tehn it shouldn't be a prob. that is, it shouldn't be a problem if you DON'T put your thumb in the back

If you ever get a chance to see satch play, look at his hand position, same goes for yngwie malmsteen, steve vai, jani liimatainen, etc. You can learn a hell of alot by just WATCHING those guys. You don't have to learn their stuff to be able to play as good as them. but if i were you, strive to be better :) cause whats the point of only wanting to be as good as satch or malmsteen etc? if you think like that you will ONLY be as good as them, not better.

Blackstar,
I just saw Satriani play Surfin with the alien and he does a lot of these gimmicks(uh,Anyone knows what he's doin with that whammy bar..He seems to be hittin the string with that)

He does indeed keep his thumb at the back of the neck and seems to make monstrous stretches.....I can't make that big stretches....
I play a acoustic(i have a electric as well)...I am tryin to practise all these legato stuff on the acoustic cause i think if i can do it here easily..I guess i can do that on a electric while i get some sleep :)

Or am i wrong and is it simply impossible to do what Satch does on a acoustic?

I've been doin legato style stuff all day long...the only thing that is happned is my fingers haven't bled as of yet :) I can certainly play Always with me.....But my speed doesn't seem to have improved

Thanks for the great help mate

dude your speed will improve, it just takes time. I don't do legato though at all though really, i pick everything.

legato can be done on acoustic, but i figure it would be easier to pick everything, but that's just me and i kinda hate acoustic guitars, oh well :)

keep it up man :)
