I've got an 83 American Stnd Strat I'm going to learn on. I'm wondering what guage strings are best for beginners? I would think thin are better but what do I know????

You can experiment with some different brands, but I would suggest a set that goes from .009 for the first string, and .042 for the sixth string. This is really a standard gauge for the electric. If after you have been playing a while, you could try .010 for the first, down to .046 for the sixth.

I use 10-46 on my Strat. Not to sure what was on it originally, prolly 9-42. But as cyberfret said, experiment a bit but I wouldn't go any higher or lower than 9-42 or 10-46 coz if you go any higher or lower you may need to have your guitar adjusted.
