i've been trying to start a progressive metal band for a while now, and NOBODY i've jammed with can play there ****ing instrument, i got an idea for you, ****ing practice you lazy ass. I've jammed with a drummer, they ****ing sucked, and didn't know what a double kick pedal was. What a ****ing moron. The Keyboardist i jammed with wasn't much better than me, and i don't even play ****ing keyboards, and i've only played one once or twice. The bassist i jammed with was sooooooooooo ****ing bad, all he could play was grunge ****. Jesus Christ the msuic scene is ****ing dead, does anybody know how to play anymore? I can't find anyone that know's how to play anything but power chords.
Jesus I'm pissed, and i'm forgetting about starting a band cause it's ****ing impossible where i live cause everybody i've jammed with is an idiot at their instrument. whatever happened to ****ing DEDICATION?
ok, i just had to let that out, thanks :)

I feel your pain...
Everyone (I think) that has been in a band of any kind has been thru that. in the last year and a half I have played with 6 different lead guitarist, 2 female singers, 4 keyboardist, half dozen other "musicians", now I changed bands. I can think of dozens of reasons that a band can come apart. but only a few why the last. my advise to you is keep looking and keep trying, all you need is to find is one or two who are like minded and things might change.

I think you hit the nail on the head, Gibby---"musicians"! People that are interested in music for its own sake, not because they want to be stars on MTV. If ya can't play your instrument, you're not gonna get far.:(

i cant even find anyone to even try to make a band. i know one person with a crappy bass that never practices. at my school theres a buncha percussionists that dont know what the hell a drum set is. and guitarists at my age are rarely heard of around here. i feel your pain but ive got alot of pain too.

I was in my first band at 13....it was cool, but we were 13...it lasted through most of high school, but people's goals change...i'm the only one out of that band that still plays music...lol
my issue these days is I'm the only guitarist in our band, and I really want to bring in a rhythm player, but just can't find anybody....its frustrating, but i'll live i suppose...we don't have a whole lot of "solo" work in our songs, but there would be more if we had a rhythm guitarist....playin live, when ya cut to a solo, without a rhythm player it just kinda kills the heaviness in my opinion...looks like i'm gonna be "overdubbing"....lol

I can relate to all of that.
The good and the bad. When I was 13 I started a band with some friend who barely even knew what music was (I was one of them, lol). We had 2 or 3 practices then called it quits. Itoo am the only one still playing/writing music. But now I'm in a great band with awesome musicians. It's a worship band that we're putting together to play in the church services, and we've only been playing together for about a month (1 practice a week) and we're sounding really tight. Our drummer is improving HEAPS (he never played proffesionally or took lessons) but still has alot of room to improve. And we're hoping to actually start performing next month. But I also want to start up a metal/rock/blues/jazz band, or even just a group where we can just practice and learn songs and teach each other, just jam or something, but there is no one I know who can actually play. Apart from the people in the worship team. And they're not into that sorta thing.

It seems to me that the music scene has deteriorated with the coming of video---music has become a visual experience instead of an aural one. If you look at all the top names in music, I mean the real "money makers", how many of them can even play an instrument? I'm talking about the people who get all the press. Anyone I see performing now has at least six people dancing along side them to deflect attention away from the fact that they have really weak vocal skills. Naturally, I'm talking about the Madonnas and Britneys of the world, there will always be great musicians like Dave Matthews, but if our kids only see they cheesy lite performers like the Backside Boys, are they really being exposed to music? Will they want to be like Eric Clapton when they grow up, or like Justin Timberlake??

I've given up on trying to find a band. Now I write music with fruity loops and record my guitar parts with cakewalk. If it ever goes anywhere I'll hire a band.
Now, if I could just find a good singer to do vocals for me...

Hang in there guyz, remember, keep practicing, the better we are, the more "in demand" we'll be. Make sure ya chops are polished and post some ads around town, message boards like these, ya might even cough up 30 or 40 bucks and put an ad in the local paper(that hurts but usually pretty effective). Then you can jam w/ a tun of people and pick-n-choose, ya know? Ive been looking for people (drums, bass and vox) for a couple of weeks now, not long but I hear you guyz and feel ya pain!
PS we could always move to Hollywood where musicians are a dime a dozen...

I read the classical guitarist problems here. Why do yuu think that all the guitar genies are forming a band around them. Playing in a band that isn't all about you is making concessions. It is a lot harder to play in a band than for yourself. many people forget that. You have to get your rythm right, and you cannot expect people that you first start playing with to rip the stars out of the sky. You have to get used to each other, first times everybody has a little bit more stress. Keep that in mind.
But still, even if you are playing with people first time, you can get a pretty good impression on their skills if you let them play a part of a piece of music that they like best playing. Don't jam along, but let them play it alone, when people start with playing a part that they know and can do, they will be more relaxed and will then start to perform better if you start jammin'
Good luck all band formers!
