Would it be a good idea if all the members had there own little IM screen with the members who are currently online? or is it a waste of time and should we just stick with IM services currently available?
P.S. IM = Instant Messaging

I think we had a form of chat going at one time but it took up too much bandwidth and there wasn't enough demand for it.
We could make an UnOfficial Cfret Chatroom,(Not run by the Cfret server) I know it can be done though I have no idea how you go about it.

Pop if we use hawks idea, we will need the username and password database to get shared between the two systems. Then the only bandwidth for CFret would be sending and receiving the confirmations that the user has signed on correctly and when they sign out.
But I guess it would be too expensive unless we put sponsor banners throughout the IM user interface.
But the question is, is anyone out there willing to do this for free?

I personally hate chat, so there will not be any site sanctioned chat room. I prefer the forum format. But if someone would like to set up something outside of this site, that is fine.

Hence, UnOfficial Cfret ChatRoom.
Anyone know how to make a chatroom?

You have to get a provider/sponsor...

I don't know if it makes any kind of difference, but the RatBit forums are set up for cyberfret members to have off-topic chat. It's no IM service or chatroom, but it's still good.

That's what we used to have. There were a lot of people using it at first but it died out pretty quickly.

The problem with the old chat room was because of the diferent time zones. It was hard to find people in their on a regular basis and when there were people it was maybe 3 at the most in there at the same time.
It would be waaaay easier to just set up an IRC channel.
Yeah, there we go... So... how does one go about doing that?

there is a im thingy called camfrog... its some video chat, but you can make your own chatroom there. But since its a video chat you could watch the people play or jsut listen to them. I dont have a link though, so you would have to go out and find it. Jsut a thought, maybe using an existing im service.

are we gonna set it up on a different web page or are we gonna try and keep it on this site??
...
If you use IRC, USE THE SAME NAMES AS ON THE FORUMS!

i think we should find a java applet to connect to irc so people dont have to download programs to chat
http://cgiirc.sourceforge.net/
it does the same thing as a java applet would, it works pretty well, i've used it before for other chat rooms.

Thats why, the authorisation codes will be using the same database as the cfret one. Then we will be forced to use the ones we already have or, create a new account

Do you know how to set it up correctly?

I have not read every single post here, but for reference
This will not be hosted on this site
It will not be tied into the forum database
If you want to set up something on another site, like the ratbit off topic forums...that's fine. But this is not something that I or this site will have anything to do with. I believe that this has been tried multiple times in the past. Everyone is so enthusiastic at first, like now, but it does not work because of the reasons stated earlier in this tread.

I think we should just stick to the forum, i think making a chat room is way more trouble than its worth, and i doubt that the number of people using the chat room will be all that great.
ill talk to a friend of mine, he writes php programs and also some in java
he might be able to get something going for you guys
you will need a host though for it
go with something cheap, www.sv1.us
my friend could probably program it all for about $50
let me know what you think.
