I prefer heavy strings. Unless the guitar is the problem, they will stay in tune longer and generally be more resiliant than lighter strings. They also have better tone, just because the weight of the string will give you more sustain. A higher action on the guitar also allows a little more picking agression. If you like bending though, you'll have your work cut out. Personally I use .049 to .011
Incidentally when I put new strings on, I break them in and stabilize the string tone by pulling the strings gently up away from the finger board. When you put a new string on and get it in tune (and I always change strings one at a time, maintaining pressure on the guitar) take the new string and pull it up away from the fingerboard about 1/2 inch. Don't use a lot of strength, the goal is to stretch them just slightly and to make sure that any slack above the nut is taken out. Play the string note again and you will likely find it is out of tune. Tune it up to pitch again and then pull gently again. I find that doing it about 3 - 4 times generally conditions the string so that it holds the pitch. Do it on each string as you replace them and you will find that new strings are not the bother they have been in the past.
