ive been playing about half a year, and i think its time for me to start dropping my beginner techniques and find some style from pro guitarists. what are some classic rock songs i should listen to, whether for technique or just because its good?

listen to dream theater, symphony X, dark moor, sonata arctica, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Jason Becker, Racer X and Yngwie Malmsteen.
Also go to www.chopsfromhell.com. There are plenty of technique columns there, When you get to the site just click on guest columnists and browse the different artists, there are some cool techinques. I'd suggest looking at rusty cooley, John Bjork, George Bellas, Chris Broderick, Darryl Gable and Davy Ho Thong.
When working on adnavnced techniques always start slow and with a clean tone so you can hear any mistakes you are making and then in crease your speed and add distortion to wokr on your muting technique, but NOT until you can play clean slowly.

well, what do you mean by "drop the basics"? most songs are pretty basic. once you get to a certain point of experiance you'll understand what i'm sayin.
but anyway these are some of the classic rock songs I learned at the .5 year mark
Ain't takin bout love - Van halen
running with the devil - Van halen
The Rover - Led Zeppelin (good song most people forgot, or don't know about)
Sweet home alabama - lynard skynard
Black Dog - Led Zeppelin
Panama - Van Halen
and a lot of black Sabbath

One Way Out: Allman bros.: to learn bottle neck
Hustled Down in Texas: Johnny Winter: to learn Texas tornado blues
Crossroads: Robert Johnson: to learn pre_WWII delta blues
Muddy Waters: anything: to learn Chicago Blues
Kansas City: David Bromberg: to learn to flail
Rescue Me: Roy Buchannan: to learn how to get the most out of a note
Black Magic Woman: Carlos Santana: to learn expressive phrasing
I'm Going Home: Alvin Lee: to learn Raw emotional playing
I know you said rock songs... but remember "the blues had a baby, and, they called it rock and roll". Sorry if I digress
