ok, im a beginning guitar player. i have an electric guitar, fender squier stratocaster. and im searching around for an effects pedal. i dont want anything fancy. actually, all i want is something to switch from low distortion to high distortion. im just wondering, what are some things to look for when buying an effects pedal that'll switch form low distortion to high distortion? and also, what is this effects pedal called? Thanks.

Go to a music store and play on different effect pedals and find one you like.
There are tons of brands out there, some are better than others...and more expensive.
Boss makes good quality pedals, and they've got at least 5 distortion pedals. Marshall also has a couple of good distortion pedals. The Marshall ones are made of steel so they're very durable. A lot of pedals are made from plastic, which can easily crack.
You might also want to do a search online and get a feel for what' out there.
ps you're looking for a "distortion pedal."

I bought a Marshall Bluesbreaker II. It has switch positions, boost and blues. The boost is a nice lean pre amp smoother overdrive sound. The blues setting will take you from a very mellow distortion to really raunchy. Very versatile. I use it for blues and for jazz. Both settings also have tone and drive controls which give a lot of variation. I like it and paid $100 cdn for it, about $65 US. Your dollar is scarring me.

If you got the money ($150) get a Digitech RP200. Its can hold 80 effects and is very easy to use. I know its not what you said but its worth your money.

If you want an OD boost, look into the marshall pedals. They are pretty nice. Look at the Ibanez tube screamer as well.
If you want a great sounding effects unit, get the Line 6 POD. They are 350 bucks with a 100 dollar rebate. I got one and I love it. The sounds on it are so tube-like it's not even funny. They aren't exactly like a tube amp... but it's close enough that my sound is all the POD.

well it's always good to know someone is pleased with new gear. It's always sad to get new gear and hate it and feel like you wasted good cash! Good luck w/ the new pedal!
