Figured I ask you since your the Metallica-Know-It-All or well at least know a hell of alot. So the question is on Fade to Black does James fingerpick the acoustic part or sometimes use a pick on some live gigs? I can do both but am just curious since I have a upcoming guitar project tomorrow. Cos' I can use a pick pretty easily for it but I'm sure it's playing more notes then should be. So for my "live" gig tomorrow would a fingerpicking electric version would be best or a simple acoustic picking one?

hmmm, well on cunning stunts the intro and verse is played with a pick,and on the vh1 awards they're played with a pick.
The studio version also sounds like its done with a pick. Just make sure you have the right tab... altho I suppose its a bit too late to learn new tab, hehe. but if you want to, check out this site http://playmet.adamek.sk/

Heh I did my guitar project today and it went well, better then planned. But umm I could of sworn on the 1985 live Fade to Black James was fingerpicking the verse part since his thumb was in that bass note picking position and his other fingers were curled down. I may be wrong though... but thanx for the whole using a pick deal.

Are you exactly sure? Cos' from what I seen it was fingerpicking but I may be wrong, since the camera only stayed on James right hand position for like the most 2-3 seconds throughout the song. And the rest was pretty dark from the lights dimming.

I'm just taking this from the cunning stunts vid. Jaymz is definately using a pick, and kirk is definately finger picking the verse. But he gets a pick for the chorus. But either way, it doesn't matter. You can finger pick it, or you can just pick it... they almost sound exactly the same... its what's easier I guess. I find the pick easier coz of the harder parts i.e. solos etc.

I play the song with a pick, if that matters to u! :) It sounds like it's a pick... I'll have to watch cunning stuntz more closely and see.
