What is key for every lead player to know before attempting to write a good exciting solo?

the feel you want to give to the song
thats what you need to know before attempting =]
The key of D, it uses all the hard rockin chords, A, G, D, Em, etc. A and E are also popular with rockers too. Most blues guitarists will not care what key they are in and just play Eminor pentatonic over everything. Vai lovers like me will probably dissect each chord to get its root notes and arrive at an "optimum" scale which will sound ridiculous, but hey it's optimum.

sometimes though he's the most profound musician on the face of the planet
the bares bones for improvising a good solo is the basic root position of pentitonic scales and of the natural major scale and minor scales and how they work over scales
