hello,
tom morello talks about manipulating white noise in his songs but what is it exactly??

i suppose 'white noise' is like static or hiss (not always high in pitch). I heard it called 'dirty noise' once before, which almost describes it.

the closest guitar sound that i can think of would be distortion. that humming/hissing/crackling etc. noise added to the note you are playing would be similar to white noise.

Or your TV or Radio when it is not tuned into anything and just 'hissed' away.

I would be unwanted noise if you didn't control it properly, so maybe that is what tom is on about. using the guitar not just to play notes, but to make new sounds.

something like that anyway, this is comming from an electronics student. and white noise would be a dirty contamenated signal.

I saw somebody play guitar up in wales once who used 'fret buzz' as a white noise addition to his playing.

very odd.

i just reckon he couldn't fix his bridge. :)

I posted a thread asking "What is a 'dead note'." Perhaps that this 'White Noise' is a dead note. Who knows, I sure dont.
