Hey guys,

Can scales be played anywhere on the fret board? For example, can the minor pentatonic scale be played on the 1st fret and/or the 2nd etc. Could you guys clear this up for me? Thanks in advance.

yes you can play it everywhere on the fretboard ... be sure to understand what is the root of a scale to know what scale key you are playing

You can transpose everything (chords, scales, licks, etc..) that has no open strings in it by moving it to different places on the fretboard, but you should know the key you are playing in then...

Thats why guitar is so great.
Whats really cool is to learn the notes on the fretboard like the back of your hand, then you can play any scale, in any key, and know all the notes your playing, dont think in terms like, "Oh, this is the as A minor pentatonic cause its an A minor pentatonic box that starts on the 5th fret of this big string right here."

memorizing the names on the neck may be gueling but so worth it if you want to get good, I am working on it right now it does help a lot for soloing and stuff

Me too. Got this book with scales and stuff, that you run up and down the neck in all sorts of different places, and I say the note names aloud, it helps me learn them.

and if you ever want to take the leap to learn to play like sheet music notation stuff you will be a step ahead of the gang

Thats the great part, I can already read music. I really hate tab. Getting started with tab is a step in the wrong direction if you ask me.

haha exactly man like people need to do the theory stuff thats an easy way to get good, i look at it as this being good on the guitar is mostly knowlege and some skill, now you can only get so far with natural God given ability but knowlege is endless. I am just fortunate I starting learning the right way music theory that stuff

Yeah, its like all these beginners come on the net and say "Where can I learn to read tab." I just tell them to start reading music. Tab is painting by numbers without the paint.

learn the cycle/circle of fifths. do exercises like playing all the major scales in one position...this allows you to familiarize yourself with every key and then you dont have to memorize every single note on the fretboard.

learning to sight read is good...especially when youre a guitarist it amazes the pants off all those people playing their horns and strings
