It takes quite a long time to get a good ear but the more songs you try and work out by yourself the better you will get. Try some simple song in the begining. In the begining I used to work out Green Day songs and this helped me a lot.

You can start now with your ear training. But, like The Fury said, start simple. I am still learning alot by ear, but I always find the basic chord changes first. Then I have the songs key and go from there.

Here's a tip: Use bar chords on the EAD strings to get started on the chord changes.

Peace!

The best way to start to train your ears is by listening to songs that have a slow(tempo-wise) bass playing.

Okay.. like Stan by Eminem.. the change between one bass note to another is very long.. this makes it easier for you to figure it out. So just pick up the guitar, use the E, A and D strings and listen to some slow-bass-playing songs.. try Shaakira's Underneath Your Clothes' intro first. :)

Check out the ear training section here at Cyberfret.com. The lesson called "Learning music by ear 1" will give you some of the fundamentals of figuring a song out by ear.
