Just play the note or chord, then push down on the whammy bar until the strings are slack.

You'll break your bridge unless you have a Floyd Rose Tremolo. Floyd Rose Tremolo's are a pain in the ass, so if you really want a dive bomb I recommend some kind of tremolo pedal.

No, I can do dive bombs fine on my strat, the only advantage of a floyd rose is that it stays in tune much bettwer. The only bridge I know of that isnt suitable is maybe a bigsby trem (I think, I dont have one).
Also, a tremelo pedal has a completely effect from a whammy bar. A tremelo pedal modulates the volume of the signal steadily. (ie loud, soft, loud, soft, loud, soft etc, really quick) a whammy pedal could give a similar effect to a dive bomb. Digitech are one of the few companies that make one. When you hear people talking about dive bombs, though, theyll nearly always mean on the whammy bar.

Strats can do dive bombs? I've never tried on my Squier cuz the bridge would probably break. It's already startin' to come out.

Yeah, I can do it fine on mine. What do you mean by the bridge will break? On mine I just push the bar right down until the strings are slack.

The bar is very hard to push, and when you look at the bridge it's one piece of metal screwed to the body that would bend or snap if you dive bombed.

The bridge is screwed directly to the body? Sounds like you have a wierd guitar. Have you changed the bridge? Is there a cavity in the back with springs? This should be the only place the bridge is actually screwed on. The bridge is held in place by little screws on the top, but these move independently of the bridge. They only stop it moving forward.

Disregard what I said about the bridge. I looked closely at it and saw my error. However, I'm still not gonna attempt it because I still have paranoia the brigde will break. I figure that if there's that much resistance that I shouldn't push it that far anyway. Squiers aren't exactly top-quality guitars either.

Yeah, I think thats probably a good idea. If it is really difficult to push, dont force it or something will break.
