Hello. On my guitar I have 2 single coil pick ups, and a humbucker, and a 5 way selector switch. And when I change the selection of my pickups, in some cases it will let out a humming noise, similar to the noise you get from loud distortion. Except this noise is alot clearer and louder, I even get it when my amp is on clean. So I can pretty much assume that my guitar is screwed up or something. If you guys know whats wrong, please help me. Thanks.

Well what position is this hum comming out at? If it's when your on the single coils it is probably just them. Single coils have a natural buzz that humbuckers fixed. If it's really bad, it's probably a wiring problem.

If you have the humbucker in the bridge position you should only get hum in a couple of switch positions, the neck alone, and the bridge and middle together, if this is all your getting it is normal it happens to all but the best guitars (with single coils)

the only way to sort it out is to shield the guitar or get a noise filter but it isn't really worth it, make sure all elictical systems are turned off and don't face you amp.

Hey it's me again. The positions of my switch where I get the bad buzz is the middle, and last position (pointing towards the neck). Im not sure which pickups this selects, but my pickups are one humbucker near the bridge, a single coil in the middle, and another single coil near the neck. Thanks guys.

Yup that is just the single coil's natural hum. There really is no way to get rid of it. Better single coils will have less hum, but the hum will still be there.

Fender recently came out with some noiseless ones. Probably affects the sound a little. Single coils are known for that twanginess.
