Hey guys,
I'm just learning the key of c scale, i just need to know, since i've basically got it memorized, what can i do with it? Could you give a couple of ways/exercises to get me started on it?
What chords are mainly used in rock/grunge music?

Thanks in advance

James

You should learn the E-Scale and play around in the key of E. You can do a lot with it. But for rock/grunge, I'd recommend learning all of your powerchords (E5, A5, G5, B5, and D5, namely).

Think of it differently. You have basically got the 'pattern' memorized for all Major Scales. The key makes no difference in the pattern shape, you simply shift the pattern according to the root desired. The benefits of learning scales are tremendously deep, and the uses for them are always broadening in my mind. One of the first and foremost reasons is for improv. If/when you can identify what key a song is in, you can use your knowledge of where that particular scale exists on the fretboard to improv. your own riffs or use common licks etc...As you advance you will find that knowing scales is invaluable in creating your own chords when you start to think in terms of intervals on the fretboard. There's countless ways of playing pretty much any chord on the fretboard.

As for rock/grunge music, (the vast majority) sticks to the very basic chords for the most part...barred chords are your most important weapon for that style of music (powerchords are merely simplified barred chords, 1st + 5th degree of scale notes). Hope this has been informative.

There will (hopefully) come a point where you grow tired of composing music using the 'common' chords the general public uses, once you dive into making your own chords, your music truly becomes unique.

I agree with Wise, Use the scales all around the neck dont stick on just one part of your fretboard ...

for grunge, rock, punk and also Metal use massively diad (2 strings) Minor and Major Power Chords
