They are used for creating tension. They arn't very harmonious chords so you get a great sound when you resolve the tension. An example of this would be, play and Augmented D then a G major.

D aug G
e:---6--------3-------------
B:---7--------3------------
G:---7--------0------------
D:---8--------0------------
A:------------2-------------
E:------------3-------------

This is from the intro of a Seahorses song called 'Hello' (You almost certainly wont know the song, it's only an album track and they arn't very popular :()

I agree with Fury and Michaelo, but if it sounds good, include it. I personally have never used augmented and diminished chords when putting together songs, I don't think they sound so good, myself. However, I have came upon instances where a chord that does not sound good strummed at all, sounds just fine when arpeggiated in a certain patern.

Here is an example of an arpeggio, if the term is unfamiliar to you:

e--------------------|--------------------|-------------------
B-------------1------|-------------1------|------------1------
G-------0---0---0----|-------0---0---0----|------0---0---0----
D-----2---2-------2--|-----0---0-------0--|----2---2-------2--
A---3----------------|---2----------------|--0----------------
E--------------------|--------------------|-------------------

That was actually three arpeggios, from left to right: Cmaj, Csus2/B, and Am7. It's not an original, that riff is from a band called The Calling, from their song "Wherever You Will Go". It is the intro riff, I believe. But, if you knew what an arpeggio was, then I went off on another one of my rants. Seems I can say anything without diagramming it, too. :p

i use chords that are loud and break the windows with lotsa distortion, lol, anyways...heres something to consider : if you want happy, use major chords. if you want sad, use minor chords...make sure ur chord progressions work tho!

chord progressions. that means the order your chords are played. only certain chords can be played one after the other and sound right. theres a whle section on it in this website...i dont know the formula for chord progressions myself. this website will pretty much tell u anything u wanna know.

ummm, an example, if you play an Am chord and then play...an A major chord....it wouldnt sound right. if you played an Am and then played a C chord...it sounds like it fits. does this help? hope i didnt confuse u
