Tapping help please

I'm new to tapping. I was wondering if the setup of the guitar is significant to the effect. I find that when the action is high, I get a good clear tap but that it is difficult to perform on other than the first string due to interference. On the other hand if the action is low, I don't have the interference problem, but the tap is not of significant strength. Thoughts? Just a matter of time? I prefer a fairly low action.

this is how I personally 'tap' to get more of a sound... (and its going to be a bit tricky to explain!)

with your picking hand and your favourite tapping finger (or pick if your that way inclined) come down on the fret 'straight on' and stike it, then instead off pulling your finger straight off, come off at an angle slightly to pick the string almost. that will give a bit more power to the fret you are pulling off to. (I can't find another way to re-phrase 'pulling off to' - sorry to all people easily offended)

so, finger hits fret in straight line, slight twist of wrist (slight = 2-3mm) moves finger off the string sideways a little bit.

how a bout using a pedal when it comes to the solo/tapping. get a pedal with good high end sound -
i have a zoom tri-metal, its got several settings, few of which have lovely high end sounds.
if not - set the action in between.
say about 3-4mm

i figure its a really good metal technique to kno if u can do it well, and i cant but anywhoot, heres the question:
now i tap over the 24th fret for this, or what, like just as a guideline, how do u guys do it, and i hav no idea how to propose this large of a pull off, and since i cant figure out this solo on my own im pretty much going by tabs a great deal, its the fast part of the solo from metallica "One" not a fan of the band, but i think hammet kicks a$$.
