"quilted top" just for looks? what exactly does that mean?

Quilted top is just the look and style of the wood that is visible. Here is an example of quilted top: www.carvin.com/images/guitars-in-stock/enlarged/55729-b.jpg

that's what i thought....
i just wondered if it affected the sound of the guitar any....esp if they changed the type of wood on the quilted top from the rest of the body.......

Well it does make a difference if the wood of the body itself is different. Now, it the guitar is like a les paul with a 'cosmetic' wood and a body wood. What you see maybe a more pretty wood where the body itself is a better sounding wood but not as nice looking. If the body is one type of wood then it may change the sound if the type of wood changes. Generally speaking, cosmetic things don't affect tone: such as color. But, it's when materials change, the tone will be different as well.
