on your e-string play the 4th fret and tune that to the a string, then tune you e up to the then tune it as normal, its basically half a note down, as in one fret down.
have i confused you? probably lol!

Its not half a note down, it is one note down. Notes are divided by half steps, like what you said, but half a note would be a microtone, not a semi tone.
The difference between E and F is a half step, but they are one note apart.

get a tuner which let you see the note digitally, and tune the E to D# and so on.

I will only buy chromatic tuners now, even though I dont do a lot of tuning down.

A tuner was the best $25 I ever spent! Get one! It makes life easier, especially when you're playing with others. You can tune a guitar to play by yourself and it'll sound fine but would never match recordings or others instruments.
