...you're just hanging out, you have your guitar, or someone else's guitar with you... or you're in a music store and trying out guitars... whatever...

... and especially if there are others around who are likely to hear you play (a little pressure here...LOL) ...

What is the first thing you play when you grab the axe??? :D

I play lots of stuff. I will play anything from the song ...And Justice For All to James Gang Funk#49. If I'm trying out a guitar or amp I try to play a wide range of things to see how it responds to the many styles I play. Anything from thrashing to bluesy soloing. Palm muted power chords to clean open position chords. I also try to show off ;) but not TOO much! heh heh

Well, I'd be embarrassed to just bust out blink 182 or something silly like that in a music shop where serious players might hear me, but fortuantely i do know a great Johny Smith rendition of Shenandoah from memory, so thats what i play... when i went shopping with my freind blake for his first guitar i must have played that peice on six or seven different instruments...

In a guitar store I always play....

...stairway to heaven!! ..hehe j/k, had to say it though
since no one else did. =)

I have a nice rag pickin song "beaumont rag" I like to play, really fun -- fingers constantly moving so good workout as well. I used to play the intro to "love song" by tesla back when it was cool and everyone would go wow. hehe. hmm, the solo to "love is on the way" by saigon kick is a fun one as well.

It all depends.
Who is around.
What kind of guitar is handy.
My mood.
The mood of others.

Who's around: I sure ain't gonna play David Alan Coe with some do-good folks around. Know what I mean?

What kind of guitar is handy: If I have a Classical guitar in my hand I sure can't slide on it. So it's time for some Pachelbel or Bach. Of course I bring it up to date if the mood fits. Hee hee.

My Mood: That dictates most of what I play.

The Mood of others: Phht. The people I hang with will listen to anything.

Most of the time I do my own stuff. As I think about it, I'd have to say I do something different each time. I hate requests, though. That alters my mood.
As far as pressure, I don't worry about it. I love to play, I play because of that love, and I play mostly my own stuff, so if I screw up somewhere, say like I'm daydreaming instead of thinking about what I'm playing, I can patch it up, or break into another song, something. It's my stuff and they don't usually know where it's going anyway. I guess I'm a decent ad liber.

In a music store, it's rip on those strings time, test that amp, blow the walls down. Anything from Lonnie Mack to SS will do in the music store. Especally when some one is plunking on the keyboards in the next room, I join in.
I love music store concerts.

I just do short rhythm pieces like "Iron Man" or "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and do some small riffing.

In those situations, I usually play stuff that uses lots of palm mutings or scrapes. I would play "communication breakdown" by led zeppelin cause its starts with palm muting.

yeah, and a little bit of high note speed playing. just a little, though, cause im that good at that stuff. yet! :)

HI all

In this type of sitution I play the three songs I know the best which are When I'm 64 - Beatles , Wanted Dead or Alive - Bon Jovi , and Faith - Limp Bizket. I wish I could just sit there and play something cool like Stair Way to Heaven or something like that but I am still learning so for now thats what I play in this sitution.

Cya :p

Hells Bells, by AC/DC, coz it's a quite cool riff. When someone asks me to play something that would show the power of an electric, then I turn the volume of my amp to max, the gain to 80% and go on with Smells Like Teen Spirit, but I often make mistakes playing it (therefore the distortion).

this all depends on where I'm at and what I'm doing. In a music store (and I'm shoppin') I play the intro to Willin', then Sweet home Chicago, then I flat pick somethin' like Maple Leaf Rag... if it's my buds, I'll rip into some Robert Johnson (love in vain), or David Bromberg (Loaded and Laid), or Muddy Waters (mannish Boy)... from there all bet are off

depends where i am,

if im in a music store or summit then it tends to be anything from make-it-up-as-you-go bluesy soloing to smells like teen spirit easy+fun thrashalongs.

if im at home and ive got my strat then it tends to be massively distorted 'fun' music such as linkin park or nirvana, and stuff like free (paul kossoff was the greatest lead player EVER, bar none. still cant match his solos for sheer emotion)
if ive got my 12 string then hotel yorba by the white stripes is always good, stuff off eric claptons unplugged album, and anything by the cosmic rough riders
