hello... I play guitar but I'm mostly a singer, in a metal band. We've just started recording ourselves (with a cassete recorder, nothing big) and I noticed that I sound a bit too punk for my tastes. Looking to take off that antiflag sound to my screamin, and find better techniques to avoid screwing up my voice (I like singing AND screaming.) I know part of the problem is that the tape recorder is taking off all the low end, but anybody have any suggestions? You don't have to actually be a singer, if you know one who is good you could ask him for me. Everyone I know is punk. bleh...
I dont like Shouting done in an English Accent. That usually sounds like punk all the time. Unless you like Cradle Of Filth stylee..now, those vocals require talent, or a lack of love for your voice box..:p
Try using an American accent, I know it may sound lame, but try it.
Sorry, im guessing youre not american..if you are..sing from the lungs..not the throat...do it anyway!

Sadly, I'm a US resident. CA, emopunk capital of the world... I hate all emopunk except blink182, (cuz they are funny and I've been listening to em since I was 6.) So, everyone here is punk... not even real punk (I have punk friends in britain) so its really gay.

I know what you mean about punk its everywhere and they all sound pretty much the same. Me and my friends muck around abit with singing. Me myself am better at a Cradle of Filth or The Kovenant type voice. I think it depends on the person, one of my friends is quite good at a Slipknot style voice he says to sing from the gut, just experiment i guess do a bunch of voices in the recorder till you find what you like, oh and dont try to sound like someone else because it stuff you up i think

hmmm, you know what: why don't you sing just the way YOU sing???
... ok, a bit of voice-training never hurts, like watching your breath holding the sound with your diaphragma and so control the volume and length of a note - stand with you back leant against a wall to get a feeling for the resonance of your own body and train that - if you have enough volume, you won't feel like screaming even if you do some wierd effects...
...oh, and always try to keep in the range of your voice, else you would do some damage...

or worse still, you could start squealing at gigs like your voice was breaking on the spot, all very embarrasing (no personal experiences involved here)
