the idea just poped into my head that i wanted to make one. i dont want to spend alot of money. i live in australia, so how much in aussie dollars would it cost

Aussie dollars i have no idea but probably in the neighborhood of 3-400 dollars for a pretty basic bolt on strat style guitar. You can buy kits where all you have to do is assemble them for about $350. Its going to cost about the same to build it from scratch because you need neck/tuners/body/pickups-electronics/jack/bridge/nut. Id recommend you buy the neck just because they're no fun to mess with making... thats going to cost about 80-120 dollars depending on the neck. 50 for a body blank to carve (maybe cheaper, but i saw body blanks for 50 somewhere). 25 for tuners and as much as you want on pickups, lets say 75. Then 30-50 (depends on hardtail or tremelo) for the bridge. You're already near 300 without any finishing, thats assuming you have the tools and the neck is prefretted.

would i be better off just buying a guitar that is already made.

Unless you're just curious about the process and are interested in that the yes. Its certainly not more economical, the major builders buy materials in bulk so its quite a bit cheaper for them. Its also a hell of alot of work.
