I'm new at this,I live where I can't get a lesson from a "live"
person to see alot of the simple things. I'm learning on an acoustic,
I'm a guy with big enough hands, but I cant get all the strings to
play at once on a "simple" bar, or bar chord.
Even just trying the "bar" alone....I figure I'm not holding in the right position or angle, and I know I need to practice right so
I dont have to overcome a bad habit later.
Any hints on hand position for a bar or bar chord,or practicing
to make them all ring on a bar?
Thanks.

try practising barring the 5th or 7th fret you'll probably find that your arm falls into a more comfortable position.

also i've heard that if you place you finger across the fret bar then roll it back slightly towards the nut, it may help.

this next one is just what *I* do (as is probably a no-no) I position my finger higher than normal so that from the top joint upwards is above the neck.

this makes playing A shape barre chords more difficult if you plan to barre with the index and ring fingers only, so i have to use my little finger aswell.

I'm sure there's lessons with video's on this site for playing barre chords, check them out.

well, normally the thing hindering you from a full barré is the thumb-position, so you get a lock in your wrist, so another "like I do it"-advice:
put down the fingers first, don't care about the thumb at all, don't place it, don't do anything with it (you may even let it be over the top of the neck, just don't care), make sure the fingers are in a correct position and then "let the thumb fall" in it's position behind the neck without any forcing or crouching of the wrist, ad the strength needed (not more than neccessary) and give it a try...
...also make sure that the position of you whole body is ok, like sitting upright with relaxed shoulders and that...
