theres a lot to consider when your gonna take on another instrument, like are you gonna have the patience and drive to learn another set of techniques, either instrument your gonna have to buy special strings for 'em, and how much are you really wanting to pay? The Banjos that i have seen are real expensive, like 800 to 1200 $$$$,the mandolins i seen were like 200 to 500 $$$... if that dont help...

witch one are you more comefortable with playing? if youve played one before. For me it would be the mandolin cus i already know how to play in the key of g. Although i do love the sound of the banjo, getting the banjo rolls are kinda tough, and that 5th string always F's me all up! Pluss the Mandolin is a Hell of a lot cheaper too!

sorry bout sounding like a drunken crone rambeling, i've got a serious head cold and the medicine's kicking in hardcore!

just to be devils advocate:

I would say I would get the mandoline, I think I could get more use out of it (apply it to more styles). not sure tho, never seroiusly thought about learning to play either.

you could always come up with your own idea.... the banjolin (I'm just joking)

The only instrument other than guitar that really ever interested me is a sitar. Id love to get my hands on a real one(not those crappy electric guitar sitar things) just to see what its like. Id also really like to try a scalloped fingerboard but i have no idea where to find one and would prefer not to pay the money to get it done to a neck and then hate it.

Out of the two, I'd go for a Mandolin, but I'd prefer a Lute or better still a Violin as a second instrument.

By the way, suppaenitetere, I think the Malmsteeen Strat has a scalloped fretboard - or the Ritchie Blackmore one.

55'gibby - there is a banjolin! banjolin (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/sid=021001191600004062096171629778/search/g=guitar/detail/base_id/40323)

the fury - ive already got a pretty good violin, ive been playing for 7 years. thats what got me into music.

i know how to play a good deal of instruments already, im just looking for whats next.

im looking at this mandolin: Fender FM-52E Acoustic0/Electric (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/sid=021001191600004062096171629778/search/g=guitar/detail/base_id/40164) ($189.99)

or this banjo: Fender FB-54 5-String Banjo (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/sid=021001191600004062096171629778/search/g=guitar/detail/base_id/40168) ($249.99)

im not really loyal to fender, they just seem to have the best prices and quality for what im looking for. if you know something better id appreciate it, but these look pretty good. i think im going with the banjo, but the mandolin as soon after as possible.

suppaenitetere:

i've played a couple of different guitars with a scalloped fretboards, and once you get used to them they're actually really good fun. really weird at first though.

I have a Fender inventory book and both the Malsteen and Blackmoore models have scalloped fretboards. I'd love to try one out. I may get a cheap guitar and scallop the fretboard.
Also, I believe I would get a mandolin over a banjo. I like the sound better.

Yes I know the malmsteen strat does but i cant find one. My local mars doesnt have one and neither does guitar center.

yeah i think itd be fun too. Playing a two chord progression by bending the chord rather than changing frets... hmm...

If you are serious about getting one, your Fender dealer could probably order it for you.
