Im not sure if you're aware (maybe just your ad server) but recently a noisy ad for verisign has appeared on the site. Im fine with pop-ups and im fine with banners but this is obnoxious. Sitting here listening to music only to have a racecar sound blasting out at me. I do my best to buy things through links on this site when i need something and understand the site has to do something to stay free but this is really crossing the line for instrusiveness.
Yea ive encountered this a few times as well.

I just saw the one with the car and the noise for the first time as I was reading this post......and I will agree, that was pretty obnoxious. I think I was able to eliminate that one. Sometimes I just don't have a choice. I have ad agencies that I work with, and they do not give me the option of not running one ad campaign of another. It is a take all or none situation. I try to as much as I can eliminate the really obnoxious ones....if I can. But web ads getting more and more intrusive is just a fact of life.......but messing with the tunes you have playing on your computer while surfing......now that just ain't right :)
If you still see it after today, let me know. What may happen is that I eliminate it, then they renew that ad campaign and it runs again next month. So then I have to remove it again. But like I said, if you see.....or hear it again, let me know. It usually takes about a day for my request to remove an ad to be processed.

I can't find that ad in any of the verisign ad campaigns. If you see it again, let me know if it is verisign, or someone else. I will keep trying located it and remove it if I can. Like I mentioned before, there is nothing that I can do to stop them completely. But I will remove any ads with sound that I can.

I removed the verisign banners. I never did find that exact ad, but I removed them all. So hopefully that will do the trick. It will probably take a day to take effect. But if you see it after that let me know.

well, i would do that except the noisy ads are my limit. I dont mind pop-ups and i dont mind flash ads scrolling all over the site but the noisy things are just too obnoxious. I dont like my music interupted, i dont like the **** scared out of me because i forgot to turn the speakers down, i dont like waking everyone in the house up because i forgot to turnt he speakers down etc. I dont even think they're a very good ad campaign. I personally would never look at an ad that annoys me like that. I do try to click the other ads on the site to help keep it free.

It should be gone by tomorrow.
Side note commentary.......
I personally don't like the ads that have sound. I also hate the ads that flash and just about send me into an epileptic fit.....and I don't have epilepsy. I also hate siting through 5 minutes of ads on the television just to watch 7 minutes of a show. But I guess I would hate it even more if my only choice when I turned on the television was to watch a pay per view show. I wouldn't have to put up with the ads. But I guess in the end I like the ads better that shelling out more money for the shows that I am watching.
If there is one thing for sure about the direction of Internet advertising, it is going to become more intrusive. You are going to see more motion, more sound, more ways that they are going to try and get your attention. You are probably going to see TV like ads soon as well. Where you will have to watch a small ad presentation before you can view a page of content. I have seen things like that on many sites. Will people like it, no. Will I like it, no. Will I put up with it if I see it on a site.......If the content is worthy, yes.
People hate pop up banners. I get hate mail all of the time. "Drop the pop ups or I am not going to come to the site any more." My reply is always the same....Without the pop ups Cyberfret.com could not exist. So you wouldn't be coming to the site anyway. So....sorry to see you go....bye, bye.
When pop ups first came on the scene, I resisted using them. Then a funny....or not so funny thing happened....they became the only type of ad that paid very well at all. So all of the sudden the choice was no Cyberfret.com or bite the bullet and include popups. And then the pop up rates dropped and the choice became, add more pop ups or close Cyberfret. So as you can see, we are still here....maybe with a little more advertising than some like....but we are here.
Now we have ads with sound. And I don't like ads with sound, and so I have taken down the couple that have been brought to my attention. But I guarantee more are on the way. And not just one, and not just on Cyberfret.com. And maybe eventually all of the ads will have sound. And the choice will be to close down Cyberfret.com....or run ads with sound. That day has not happened yet....so I don't have to make that decision now.....but I will...guaranteed.
There are plenty of pay per view options for learning the guitar. There are plenty of pay sites, and you can buy all kinds of books, and videos, CD ROMs, or take private lessons. The heart and soul behind Cyberfret.com is that it is free. Well, maybe not completely free. You may have to pay in ad toleration. Different people will draw the line for what they will tolerate in different places. For some, that line is sound in the ads. And I respect that. And I agree that is pretty obnoxious. That is why I have removed them. And I am definitely glad that it was an easy choice.......both of those noisy ads that I took down didn't pay very well :)

well....i have your solution...well...sort of....
i cant make the ads go away...and i hate them too...but i also try to click on them some just so the site gets some sort of credit on its click thru rates....and yeah...once ive done that...i usually look around the ad even if its just for a few seconds...sounds like a waste....but i think a few seconds of my time is well worth keeping this site going....
oh yeah....my solution :) sorry to keep you waiting...lol....
its a no brainer....when you enter the forums...turn off your sound...lol....
ok maybe not a good solution if you are listenin to some tunes while you read.....but its what i do....so the sound ones dont bother me....
the ones that DO are the ones shawn mentioned...the flashing one...cuz the whole epileptic thing isnt as funny as it sounds! ok i dont have epilepsy either. but what i DO have is light sensitive migraines....and usually when one of those flashy ads pop up i just click on my forum window so its bigger than the ad and covers it up...and i leave it be so another doesnt pop up again....
so i guess thats a solution too....just cover the ads with another window....
cuz they are just too important to just remove.....we depend on them....really if you think about it...everyone was upset when guitar mania went pay per view...and alot of people dropped out...i know i did....so i think the ads are just going to be something to deal with....

Yeah cyber, i understand you have to do whatever you need to do to keep the site going and id rather have noise than no cyberfret but they still bug me. I've resisted it for a long time tryin to be fair to sites i like but if the trend keeps going this way (not just for cyber, for most sites i visit) i may finally get an ad blocker.
"Drop the pop ups or I am not going to come to the site any more."
That is one seriously flawed and silly arguement. You dont really lose much if they dont show up, they're probably not clicking the ads anyway. Even if they were I KNOW you're not making a profit and id wager a bit of its coming out of your own pocket to help keep the site alive. In summary, thanks for keeping the site going cyberfret, and for resisting obnoxious ads as long as you can.
