I dont understand the concept of the numbers, and pardon me for my idiocy, but what are the frets? Thank you very much. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hey Matchsticklette

Shawn, the owner of this site, has some excellent free lessons. Here is a link to the very basics.

http://www.cyberfret.com/first-fret/index.htm

If you have any questions on anything, just post your queay and someone will jump in and tell you something about it.

About frets.
Oh, you are new. : )
'Fret' not, as we all were new to the guitar at one time.
Ok, as you look at your guitar, there is a body. That's the large part. Sticking out from the body is a long piece of wood, that's the neck.
Yeah, I'm messin' with ya.
If you look at the neck, under the strings, you'll see some brass colored wires layed into the fretboard on the neck at intervels up the neck and that they are raised up a bit. Those brass looking wires are call frets.
When you play, you put your fingers right behind the fret, pessing the string down so the string lays across the fret. That is what gives you a different sound on that string than when you just pluck it when it's open.

But, check out the link above, most everything you need to understand what's going on for the beginning guitar student is right there. Easy to understand instructions and diagrams. Shawn is a music instructor so it's not like some plumber has wrote those lessons.
Good luck, and remember to ask, ask, ask those questions you have, and let us know how your progressing.

The frets are the bars that are on the neck of the guitar. I'm a beiginner so I might be wrong. The numbers tell you what fret to put your finger on; and what string. (If you're looking at tab) Does that help?
