Here is a neat little trick to always remember where your 1, 4, 5 chords are when your playing a progression. And this works great with power chords and barre chords.
Say you want to play power chords in the key of A, your 1 is A, your 4 would be D and your 5 would be E.
So your A chord would be at the 5th fret on the low E (thick string) then move down one string to the A string, same power chord shape, still at the 5th fret, that's your D chord, now staying on the A string, move down two frets to the 7th fret on the A string, that's your E chord.
No matter what key you start out in, this will give you your 1, 4, 5 chord progression.
Example, key of A
E_____________________
B_____________________
G___________7____9____
D______7____7____9____
A______7____5____7____
E______5______________
Example in key of G
E______________________
B______________________
G____________5____7____
D_______5____5____7____
A_______5____3____5____
E_______3_______________
