Ok how many of u have had jam sessions where ull get together and play..... absolutely nothing! The sorta sessions where everyone goes on their own ego trip, amps at max gain and volume... Jonny Be Good blairing from one corner, the same repetitive For Whom The Bell Tolls riff (u know the one) from the other corner, the bassist is too busy smokin on his bong, the drummers pounding away some god awful random malarky!! I hate it i wanna play together, one thing that doesnt help is that we all have different tastes in music. Another is theres like 4 guitarists but even when theres 2 it sucks. At all jam sessions ive been to involving wide variety of musicians not once have i had a proper jam, perhaps 5mins of smthin productive. But even thats someone bashin out a power chord riff with someone widdling away on a pentatonic minor scale. Argggh! Has anyone else experienced this? Please confide with me! Any tips ppl?????

Hehehe.
Erm, well. USED to have that problem, now its a lot better. The other guitarist used to turn his volume high at every opportunity. Drove us insaane. Luckily we ALWAYS have a song to play

Theres also too much a variety in guitar competence too which sucks too. I could think of a few songs id like to play. In sayin that with one guitarist we did bash out master of puppets bar the second solo but that guys left the country now. Its really difficult to find someone with same taste and the same level of competence, its even harder to find someone who wants to play bass! Oh yeah and theres nothin worse than a bad drummer. God help me...

my band was having guitar tryouts(before i bacame a guitarist i was a drummer). this kid came to my house and played some stuff he knowed. he absolutly sucked. we like left him in my garage. he asked for a ride home and i was like umm my mom cant drive now, youll have to walk. it was like 11 at night and we made him walk home. I thought it was funny, you may think its mean but im sure you would have done it if he tryed out for your band.

the last band practise I had, we ended up with 2 guitarists, one (me) playing Satriani stuff, the other one was playing the song "Who Are You?" by the Who, and we had another guy on a piano playing some classical thingy. After about an hour of this we just decided to pack it in and eat some pate and watch MTV2

LOL sounds like one of my sessions but we always end up "chillin out" Ha HA ha

Me n the drummer n bassist were workin on something I think, and then the other guitarist decides to turn himself up and play something bloody awful and unbearable to listen to. Was horrible and really inconsiderate. I hate that in a band member.

I have dozens of them (been playing most of my life)

one that sticks out in my mind is we were looking for a bassist and a keyboardist. a friend of a friend was a bassist (so he said) and bugged us for weeks for a try out, we finally agreed. this guy shows up with a $30 amp, a bass that the pick up didn't work, knew only 4 or 5 songs, and his mother drove him off cuz he was too drunk to drive (great first impression, huh). we had him set up (with our gear), and we tore into a free form jam just to see if he could keep up. after about 30 bars I looked over to see what was going on (there was no way we could hear him), and he was gone, bass on the floor... we stopped playing and went looking for him. we finally found him in the back yard doing the big spit (throwing up). we didn't hire him, and still haven't got the wine stain off the driveway.

whenever i have a jam session, i make sure i'm the only guitar player cause i can't work with other guitar players unless they play progressive metal and actually practice. alot of my freinds play guitar but tehy never pactice and when we get together for a jam session, it sucks, they just watch me play and say "whoa man, your wicked, show me how to do that shred stuff" so it just becomes a gigantic guitar lesson. I wish they would just friggin practice so we could actually play something or write something.

Sometimes i'll come up with a riff, a lead part over it, then borrow someones bass and make up a bassline, and then have to show eveybody how to play each part, it sucks......

people need to practice more.....well at least teh people i jam with, or DON'T jam with anymore.

@ 55 Gibby, you should have immediately poured some white wine on your driveway to remove the stain. THEN you shoulda kicked his ass

yer right EdZ... can some explain to me the love affair drummers have with those fool cymbals. what is so great about hearing BLASH BLASH BLASH BLASH... man, that's annoying! I figger you only have to tell the drummer 250,000 times to lay of the fool cymbals before they get the hint. anyone... please!

@black star and fizz

Disclaimer: Im not trying to start an argument(Id like to avoid another what is shred incident) simply stating something about nirvana. Im not sure if it will adress the reasons you dont like them but it adresses one of the problems alot of guitarists i've met have with them.

Kurt Cobain first and foremost was a writer. He was NOT a musician. I imagine if anyone actually read poems anymore he wouldnt have even bothered to play guitar. He just wanted an outlet for his writing to get heard. To not like him for just strumming power chords is like disliking most singer/songwriter types because they dont have fast screaching guitar solos. Its two totally different things. Hes one of my favorite songwriters personally but i could see how he would easily grate on some people.

PS. If you want to hear what kurt was about, listen to the unplugged... i think it did him much more justice because he wasnt hiding behind a distorted guitar.

Yeh - You know youre right.

Mr B
10-31-2002, 06:23 AM
@Fizz lol, pretty much hits the nail on the head. If Cobain was first and foremost a writer, he woulda written the songs and then played them, it's pretty obvious from listening to his stuff that he just fooled around with barre chords until he got a good riff going then put the flesh of the song over that.

what the hell supaenitetere? cant you tell youre preaching to the converted? i think that youre argument, while intelligently stated, is lofty and exalts cobain to some level that he wasnt at. what mr B says is actually realistic. cobain was a sniveling ungrateful snot who was stuck in teen angst when he should have grown up.

anyway yeah most of the people ive met here really suck and dont practice. i hate it when people say they play yet when you actually try and jam with them they just look at you and are like "what should we play?" most of the "bands" here are all punk bands with the same little formula for how they approach writing songs "uh yeah we'll start with this little riff then we'll play the riff real loud, then for the verse we'll play it palm muted, and then for the chorus we'll play it real loud again"

i find the best way to keep order during some sort of session is to take charge. ask everyone if they have any ideas, if they dont tell them what to play and make sure you know what youre talking about. when everyone is at different skill levels there should be someone who can be a leader. i have been in situations where i find people where we can all have equal input, but this hasnt happened often.

In the interest of not starting another what is shred im not commenting on anything except blackstar.

Okay, well since stating something in more than three lines without broken english and mispelled words, not to mention backing up your arguement, is preaching ill try to be a bit more on your level.

Nirvana Roollzz dood!!!

You're correct, i doubt anyone cares i like nirvana or that you dislike nirvana which leads me to ask, why did you say this?

"yes, yes, nirvana are lame, indeed"

I dont see how you're alright to say that, but I shouldnt post in response? If you dont like my writing style or "preaching" be my guest and dont read my posts, nothings stopping you. I just dont appreciate being told the equivalent of "shutup no one cares". Oh wait... im backing up my arguements again... must be preaching...

Mmmm... blueberries. Jamming is great. Can I come too? (hehe). I used to do this every weekend, then my drummer quit. But whatever, we get by with a drum machine for now. You should try Key to the Highway, it's an amazing jam tune.

And yeah, it was a Beatles reference ;)

It's Metallica ;) and not a bad tune either. Our high school does this thing for little kids on haloween where we take classrooms and make them haloween-ish. I'm in this club called Tri-M (Modern Music Masters) and we had a room... so we made a rock band. Playing Enter Sandman for five year olds... i think we scarred some young'uns.

i had a problem like that, every time we stopped a song for whatever reason, he would try to play some gutiar riff, and it wouldnt be a good one. He'd play it over and over and over and over till we turned off his amp, but he kept playing sometimes. We slapped him around, and he still did it, so he's out of the band.

Give him a muffin, choc chip should do the trick.

Anyway enough muffin talk, my jam last friday/saturday went awesomely. Man ive never been more.... 'happy' as i was on friday. On saturday we all had to much to drink. We connected all our amps together, switched on Slayer Angel of Death and moshed like hell. One of my jam fellows threw himself into the drumkit thus destroying the snare... awesome. A few bottles were thrown and smashed, thankfully i didnt have to clean up the next day. The place was indeed visited by the angels of Death
