It's been a long time since i posted...I saw a video of Eric Johnson play Cliffs of Dover...I noticed he rarely uses his fourth finger..
My question is he seems to be barrin his index when he plays those fast sequences like this

---13p11-----13p11-------
--------13p11------13--11
---------------------11--

Does he actually do that or is he too fast for me to see properly
and shifts his index around :)

What i meant was he barres the three strings and uses his ring to do
the rest ..i can see he primarily uses pentatonic patterns(ok blues)
Is that what he does?

I have tried playin without barrin and quite simpky can match his
speed in no way..though i play reasonably fast with teh barred
approach...But it's sorta painful...coz i am playin on a acoustic
and my thumb's not in the middle of the neck..My wrist is sorta
angled to the fretboard so that i can stretch and play notes which
i am supposed to do with my pinky...So Any Eric Johnson players
out here..can u help me and tell me how i should play those
sequences?

does Eric Johnson bar? I don't think so, I've seen him play dozens of fast licks on the G3 video and he doesn't bar most of them, well not the really fast ones anyway. As for the fingering, you should use your first and third fingers and avoid using the fourth, try using economy picking between the strings to speed it up a bit.

Actually, yes, he DOES bar his finger... Many good players like to use their first finger as a "mobile capo" and the other three fingers to create melodies and riffs from it. And Eric Johnson actually does this a lot!! Not for the really fast licks but for his riffs and melodies...

The main problem with this sort of technique is that you need very good finger independence and quite a strong barre finger: the goal is to move the remaining three fingers very freely even if you are barring with your index at the same time... This might take quite a while to master, but once you can play this way you will notice that you can find very comfortable fingerings for some riffs...

I've seen the video tons of times..and he surely is barrin..It becomes pretty easy to play the licks he does(when compared to movin ur finger down and up every sec)..I try to play most of his songs on a acoustic..SO i am not sure if the mutin's all right...that is muting the string right after u play it...and i was wonderin if i am the only one who has trouble shiftin my first finger between strings at a good apce
