Sup everyone,
I wanna know if anyone could help me by describing what separates each type of metal or style. like what characteristics make speed metal, thrash, progressive, etc. Cuz i play what i play, and i listen to music and stuff, but it's kinda annoying to come and say, "oh i'm a fan of power metal" or any other kind without really knowing what power metal is. :(

Yeah, i know some bands that are speed, like u said - slayer, and some power (maiden) , prog (dream theater), so on so on. but what i want to know, it wtf makes them a 'power' band, or speed or whatever, how do u know they're that?
It's nonsense really, but when it comes to describing your own sound, it's gonna be like "oh well, we sound a bit like maiden w/ metallica or megadeth"

In that case make something up.
If youve created a new sound then it will fall under a new genre.
Arguably it will fall under the PROGRESSIVE Metal/Rock Whatever.
Alternatively you can say that 'we are our own sound, call us what you want, we have better things to do with our time' then walk out, and do the horns as you leave:D

Yeah, must ppl give it too much thought, and i guess that's what i was doing.
I got a question, this sometimes happens to me and i dont know if it happens to any of you. when u're putting a song together, and you've got this simple riff, does it bother you that it sometimes doesnt sound as something you would wanna create and you just beat around it tons of times ?

power metal is the stuff with lyrics and melodies that have cheese hanging of them. Imagine if kiss were still going but had kicked it up a notch in the synth / keyboard dept. listen to halloween for examples, that stuff is hilarious
