Hi all:

Reading the diary of Trey Gunn (http://www.treygunn.com), inspired a question about the terms describing scale movements. The following illustration sets up the question. The minor pentatonic scale moves three frets from the root. I call one fret moves a semitone. I call to fret moves a tone. What are three fret moves called?

Thanks and oh yeah, I liked reading Trey Gunn's diaries. His words inspire me to keep taking risks in my studies.

Heal the planet with beautiful music,

David

Cool, I was just listening to Trey's work on the last King Crimson CD yesterday :)

You call 1 fret a "half step", you call 2 frets a "whole step", you call 3 frets a "step and a half" or a "whole step plus a half step". But there are also other names for the distance between 2 notes. A half step is also called a "minor 2nd", a whole step is called a "major 2nd", and the 3 frets is called a "minor 3rd". These distances between notes are called intervals. Check out the lessons below for more info.
