a few people on this board have suggested changing actions and other set ups. how exactly do you go about setting up an acoustic, dont they have totally fixed bridges?

bridges yes, nuts no... so could exchange the nut pretty easily just by a new one, knock the old one out (gently) and put the new one in (gently)...this will equalize the hight of the strings, so you won't have any huge difference between first and twelvth fret distance to the board...
oops, btw, on some guitars the bridge is also replacable, because the bone-piece where the strings are actually laying on is not glued to the rest of the bridge, so you can exchange this piece as easily...

if you have never replaced a nut or saddle (the bone or plastic piece the stings ride over on the bridge). get a good tech to do it for ya. it's relatively cheap, and if done wrong will make matters worse.
