Hi Guys (and Gals), I'm back! Got a couple of new questions too... Been trying to learn the song Messenger by the Tea Party, and I got the tabs off tabcrawler. They say the song is played in double drop D. There's a Bm chord there that's listed as x24430 (from low to high) . I had a some trouble with the stretch on this one, so I fiddled with some chord theory and came up with this alternative: 054400 does this work? Is it a variation of the Bm in double drop D or am I just way off base? If I'm wrong, what chord is it then? Let me know if you know:D Thanks a bunch!

That would work, but then you loose the sound of the root (B) in the bass. It just depends on the song, but that is a Bm chord..... Bm/D if you want to get picky. There is a D note in the bass instead of B. Good job in using your brain to find an alternate solution :)

Try this:

X24400

It is just a power chord, only with the first 2 string open. That 3rd fret on the 2nd string was a D, and you are getting that D note on the first string open in double drop D tuning.

If you are still having trouble reaching, but sure that your thumb in lower on the back of the neck. Even power chords are nearly impossible to play when your thumb is to high.

Thanks Shawn for your reply... Wow, never thought theory could be so much fun! Actually, while I'm on this topic, I've got another question for you (or anyone else). I don't know where else to post it... When I tune down to double drop D, I tune the high E down by tuning it to the sound of the D note on the B string. When I tune down the low E, I just tune the string to E on the seventh fret instead of the fifth (which will end up with the final pitch of the string being D). This doesn't follow the instructions I got, but does it still work? I'm asking because three chords in the strum (of the Messenger by the Tea Party) sound kind of off when I strum. Here are the chords (from low to high): (G) 444X00, (A) 555X00, (D) 777X00
The low notes sound good, but the top two open strings sound kind of shrill when I strum them, the sound just doesn't sit with the rest of the chords. Are the chords tabbed wrong, is my tuning off or is it just me?
Thanks again:cool: !

I don't know the song, so I can't tell you whether the tab is correct or not. But do keep in mind that 90% of tabs that you find on the Internet will be wrong in some way. You might try and find another version and compair the 2.

The chords "as is" sound tense, but not nessassarily bad. And what you are doing to tune to double drop D will work, so your tuning should be fine. But since they are very tense chords, being just slightly out of tune will make these chords sound bad.
