are there such thing as beginner, intermediate and expert basses? i went to the music store and this guy told me that the 5 string bass i was looking at was for "intermediates" does that make 4 string basses beginner, 5 strings intermediate and 12 strings expert??

thats not how it works... I think he was talking price.

4 or 5 string basses work for beginner or intermediate... just a 5 is a bit harder to play (physically)

so you're saying the higher the price, the higher the level of difficulty?

nope... not that at all.

salemen tend to think if it's cheap it's for a beginner, if it's really expensive it's for a pro, and everything in between is for the intermediate. that really isn't the case at all. I usually suggest buying the best instrument you can afford. I think the salesman was tring to direct you to a cheaper bass (not better just cheaper).

think about it, he is working on commission..

first you buy a cheap bass, amp....

then 6 months later, your back buying a better set-up... 2 sales, and you end up with what you were looking at when you first got there.
