View Full Version : Thoughts on string bending.......

ok i was off in my own world the other day just letting random thoughts pass through my head and somehow a geometry property popped through...and i had an idea, think about this......
the pitch of the note played on the string is raised by decreasing the vibrating length of the string from the fret(or nut) to the bridge. Increasing the length makes a lower pitch. One thing that i hate about geometry problems is that when finding the distance between two points on a graph, u must use the distance formula because the distance between two points that are not vertical or horizontal on the x-y axis is longer than say a horizontal line.
so look at it like this:
|b----a
|b
|\
|`\
|``\
|```\
|````\
|`````a
(the little ` marks are because i couldnt get it spaced rite without some type of character so pretend they arent there)
The distance from a to b in the first picture is shorter than the distance in the second picture even though the starting point (a) and b are from the same point in space to the line. Now think about this:
when you fret a note on the fingerboard, it is like the first picture. When you bend the string, the vibrating distance INCREASES
because the point of contact with the fret (b) is getting farther from the bridge(a) so theoretically since the distance of the vibrations on the string are being increased the pitch should go down.
wierd huh? just some random passing thought i had...........hopefully you have all taken high school geometry so you can understand what im talking about lol........tell me what u think of this

ok..if you think about it THAT way...then pushing down on the WHAMMY BAR should ALSO give you a LOWER NOTE....but it doesnt....it gives you a higher note!
i SUCK in geometry but the WAY i see it it's like TUNING!!!....when you TUNE a string a step up....say from D to E....you're doing NOTHING TO ALTER the length of the actual string......HOWEVER....you are raising the tension (by stretching it!)....the more you stretch it ...the HIGHER the note you will get!.....
I used to do stuff like that in A level Physics....(frequencies and stuff...there's a lot of theory behind it which i dont really feel like getting into!).....
THAT i believe is your answer to the BEND question!....

i noe its all the tension and stuff but i jes thought it was wierd that it can defy that law of geometry in that way(proof that the geometry people are only there to torment us with busy work)

well i dunno if by bending you actually increase the length....but even if you do it's only a little bit, and it WILL be cancelled out by the increased tension!
(just a thought!)\
dude, why can't you just daydream about naked women like everybody else?

But DOES the string actually get longer?
Or does the guitar neck bend slightly?
.... or both?
.... or does it pull on the whammy bar?
Why do women always go to the toilet in pairs?
What came first, the chicken or the egg?
What is the meaning of life (apart from guitar playing)?

I'm gonna guess no
Or does the guitar neck bend slightly?
Probably does...very little though
.... or both?
Only on Wednesdays
.... or does it pull on the whammy bar?
Your strings are attached directly to your whammy bar?? Interesting...
Why do women always go to the toilet in pairs?
So they can talk about you behind your back
What came first, the chicken or the egg?
Chicken
What is the meaning of life (apart from guitar playing)?
?????? There's more to life than playing guitar??? BLASPHEMER!!

But DOES the string actually get longer?
Yes, slightly.
Or does the guitar neck bend slightly?
No.
.... or both?
No.
.... or does it pull on the whammy bar?
Slightly, but the string length still gets longer.
Why do women always go to the toilet in pairs?
To engage in lesbian sex acts.
What came first, the chicken or the egg?
Who cares.
What is the meaning of life (apart from guitar playing)?
Um....... listening to someone else playing guitar?

ahahah i prefer to go to the bathroom alone...thanks...guess your theories are blown....
(altho id say the one about talking about you behind your back is a pretty strong one ;) )
