One or many dots may be placed on the right side of a note. The dot extends the duration of the note by half the note value. Each extra dot extends the duration of the note by half the preceeding dot value.
Let me put it this way...
Dotted quarter note = Quarter note + Eighth note
Dotted eighth note = dotted note + sixteenth note
Hope that helps...

@ drunkenmosquito: many??? dots??? - never seen a note with more that one dot, really...
@SoLoDude: those dotted notes are called 3/4 or 3/8 and so one, maybe that helps to understand better, what drunkenmosquito wrote... - if you devide the note into the next quicker beat (1/2 to two 1/4) just add another of the quicker beat (dotted 1/2 to two 1/4 plus dot=another 1/4 makes a dotted 1/2 a 3/4-note...)

eische - yes notes can have many dots. You usually only see one, but I've seen two on several occasions. I've never seen more than that though, but it is possible.

I don't know what's the point of having a double dotted note

hmmm, I don't understand the use of double dotted notes either - and I've never seen one, but ... well, if there're some, ok...

Well, isn't it for the same reason that there are dotted notes?

yeah, but you can write the same note again and bind them together with a bow, if you want to sound them as one or you could simply write the next higher note, because:
1/2 being dotted once bcomes a 3/4
1/2 being dotted twice would become a 4/4 - and that's the same a whole note or two 1/2 bound together...
...so, you don't get a different beat-effect, like you would have with a 3/4, pretty useless, that is - to my eye...

No, I think you misunderstand, see the second dot extends the length of the note by half the length of the the first dot. (sorry that was rather muddled)
Eg, a double dotted half note:
Half note + quater note + eigth note.
I hope that makes sense.

Damn, The Fury beat me to it :) The second or third or whatever dot has the value of half the dot before it. If they were all just half the main note then you're right, there would be no point.

hmm, yeah Fury, that's the only way it makes sense... but as I've never seen one, I didn't came to that point...hmmm, you live and you learn :D
