I am very new to playing, but I have learned the 7 basic chords and can strum and switch between them very well.
I am getting tired of just strumming the chords and I was wondering if there were some songs that I could practice that use only those 7 chords and don't require much picking of individual strings. I know my selection will be limited, but oh well.
Any help would be appreciated... Thanks

I'd recommend some folk song.
I'm always annoyed when newbies are given that stuff about the "basic chords" because they'll probably never use them.
I don't know what kind of music you play, but it's probably overrun with those power chords. Could somebody explain to me why there's all these big musicians using just power chords?

I dont know if this would be your type of music, but CCR has some really easy stuff to play with chords. Have you ever seen the rain is an easy one, and Van morris's Brown eyed girl is another easy song to play with the basic chords. You can get the chord patterns from tab crawler. Hope this helps. If you know of any other easy songs, Post them back on the page. Thanks!!

I'm brand new too and I finally found a song I can play! It's got 3 easy chords in it and that's it! A (00222x), D (000232, but I play it 000230 and it sounds fine and it's easier), and E (022100). It's called Trinity by Jennifer Knapp and lucky for you, I just typed it up for my friend, so I can post the chords here! :D It helps to hear the song, because it doesn't really sound good unless you sing along, so if you want to hear it, it's on her Kansas CD. You could listen to a demo somewhere, but I'd buy the CD, because it ROCKS! As for the strum patterns, it's not the way she does it, but I just strum once per chord and then palm mute it. It sounds fine if you sing along! :D Have fun!

Sorry, it doesn't work right when I post it, because it messes up the chords so you can tell where to change them! But if you want the song, email me (CYTgrl4Him@aol.com) and I'll email it ya!

An easy song is Blink 182 - All the small things. That is the first song that i learned. Another easy riff based song is Day Tripper by the Beatles.

Chick, its best to play an A chord without playing the low E.

Cool thanks! I'll hafta try it! I just looked in the songbook that I got that song from and it said to play A 00222x. :D But the girl who plays that song has her own way of playing lots of stuff! :D

My first song was "Come as you are - Nirvana" This one is really easy.
U can try this one for some easy power chord practicing:
Lenny Kravits - Fly Away
And "Bloodhound gang - Fire Water Burn" For some normal chord practicing.

Yeah, my favorite chord progressions (since I am also a beginner at guitar) are A, D and E. I improvise while strumming and can make out a pretty nice pattern over and over again that it actually sounds like a song now! So that's kewl! I also like Am, Em and G. Good stuff! :) Easy chords! And yes, folk music is good, especially if the chords are EASSYY!!!

I'm pretty sure Fly Away by Lenny Kravitz uses full barre chords, not power chords.

I'm pretty sure Fly Away by Lenny Kravitz uses full barre chords, not power chords.
You could be right, the tab that i dloaded kinda sucked.
Then try "Offspring - Pretty fly" for power chord practice or
"Nirvana - Smells like teen spirit"
