i always see dots on the fretboard of most guitars and basses. these dots are located on the 3rd, 6th, 9th, 12th, etc. what are these dots for? do they help you memorize notes or something? what use do they have? the dude who plays the bass in Korn uses a bass without these dots. does that mean he is an expert or something?

they never had any meaning for me except to help me realize where i was at on the fretboard....thats all...and i HATE the ones that have their dots on the edge....gets me dizzy
i suppose it wouldnt matter much if youve played so much (or the song was so simple) you never look at your fretboard anyways....
ummm...but dont ya mean 3 5 7 9 12 ?
But isn't that what the dots r for? Toshow u where abouts u r on the fretboard.......I would've been forever counting if my bass never had 'em.
I love the holodots u can get......very spiffy!!

inlays are mainly for looks but alot of people (including me) use them to find the fret they're on if they get a little "lost" while playing. later it gets to the point where you can look without playing (i can do this with some stuff).

its so you know where you are. if your improving up and down the fretboard you can find out where you are.

Well i play guitar not bass but the inlays are really for note memorization... rather than memorizing all the notes on the fretboard for each string, memorize open notes, 3rd, 5th, 7th, and 9th. 12th is same as open, 15 same as 3, etc. Then to find other notes you just go up or down from there.

i do that too actually. it makes it much easier to memorize. i just memorized like 3 little boxes, 0-5 frets, 5-8 frets, and 9-12. than when you know those notes, you know the whole fingerboard just add 12.

Agreed... if I didn't have those dots, things multiply in unnecessary complication. I don't care what anyone says, but those dots are always useful.
