I read the answer to tuning a 12 string. But I saw somewhere that you could tune down an octave to reduce stress.Does this mean every string should be tuned down an octave,or is what was described in your answer(tuning the low E's-D's to the same octave the same thing? Or is it really that big of a deal? Thanks

when im not tinkering on my ibanez 7, im an acoustic 12 string man all the way (haha dont like boring six's :)) but i've never come across downtuning any of the strings by a full octave, especially to reduce stress, 12 string necks are designed to support the tension of... 12 strings suprisingly, so i cant see why you would need to reduce tension.. even if you were using ultra-heavy guage strings, downtuning by a step or so may be feasible, full octave seems a bit excessive.
if i've got the wrong end of the stick and your question is about tuning a 12, then yes the thinner set of E, A D and G strings should all be tuned an octave HIGHER than the standard E A D and G strings. B And E strings should be tuned in unison (same pitch)
hope this helped.
