ok i have a question please do not yell at me for this but...........how is he generally considered to be the greatest? i have been lookin at a bunch of his songs and learnin them, and sure they are really good and all, but if u look at, say, stevie ray , his guitar parts a 10000000 times better (i think at least) so why is hendrix sed to be the best?

well, i have this conversation with my little brother (also a guitarist, and member of this forum, although a rare rare visitor) and i think it's fairly realistic to say that hendrix is by no means the best, hes was simply the first.

hendrix struck it lucky on a couple of notes. Firstly, he was the first, which goes a long, long way, and secondly he suffered from a healthy does of dead pop-star syndrome. as far as im concerned, a late 1960's clapton has always been way way superior to hendrix.

sorry biout any spellling mistakes, just spent last 2 hours in a police cell so im a touch shaken

yea i think the reason he is soo BIG is cause he was like the first 1 to do it all (almost). like in that Elvis commercial "befor any1 did anything he did everything" thats the way alot of people see it.

its like when people see a football player from back in the day and say hes better even though players today have better stats and more talent the old players get more hype caue they were the first 1's to say invite the spike or break the rushing record.

so yes many guitarist are more talented now-a-days and evern some back then but he was the first 1 to like step into the spot light and go past the point of no return.

oo and the last time i was in jail was for assult cause some dude wouldnt pay my band for the gig we just did. ahhh what a freaky 48 hrs that was...

jimi is one hell of a guitarist. he was the first, like elvis, but people liked him 10 years later unlike elvis :) also i think he was the first to use a wah-wah, be a major hippie, use an octavia, and mabe even the first for a rotary speaker. he is a very good player but he isn't the GREATEST. no one is, it depends on if you like blues, jazz, rock, metal, or whatever. srv right now is my favorite, because he can duplicate hendrix perfectly. listen to little wing or voodoo chile he ****ing blows me away. its much easier to create your own feeling than to copy someone elses im sure.

*shakes head*
I read that twice thinking, he had to have that backwards. I seriously hope you didnt mean it that way. If you did you really need to stop and think about it for a second.

After several unsuccessful attempts at conveying why hendrix is my favorite guitarist in other threads im going to try a different method. What equates to skill in a guitarist? Speed? How many chords he knows? How technical he is? None of that amounts to a hill of beans. Its emotion pure and simple. If you're playing a guitar with the intent to convey anything other than emotion its just masturbation. Hendrix had more emotion in his music than any guitarist i've heard, including modern day guitarists, thats why hes considered the best.

I dont understand all this talk about SRV being better-if you think that you've never heard hendrix play the blues. I think everyone can agree SRV is a more techincal player but he wasnt even in the same league for emotion. Im not really sure theres anything i could do to convince anyone otherwise but if you watch jimi hendrix play redhouse at the isle of wight, or listen to the blues version of voodoochile, hear my train a comin, born under a bad side, mannish boy, catfish blues or any other number of songs where hendrix really lets go and then listen to SRV and youll understand. SRV was a great player and i love him, but he was derivative and not anywhere near hendrix. I can talk till im blue in the face and change no ones mind so ill leave it at that.

End Note: The only thing i thought SRV did better than hendrix was little wing. Simply amazing!.

heh i dont think srv is the greatest player ever. there is no greatest player its all opinion. about what i said earlier. its much harder to play voodoo chile like jimi or you can make your own song up that is just as good but its your own emotion your making, not trying to mimic jimis. people arent comparing your new song to any others its just a new thing so people now i have to try and mimic your emotions to play it.

Don't try to mimic anybody's emotions...It can't be done...Put your own emotion into it and make it your own.

Jimi was the first to really revolutionize the guitarist, and what is possible. He jump started the ultimite guitarist. In my opinion he is not the best but for the time he sure taught us the most. In my opinion the best guitarist ever is between a couple of people, SRV, SATCH, and VAI. Those are at least the top three. I didn't include malmsteen because to me it just seems he plays fast. He doesn't really have any creativity.

Yes! ive seen the isle of wight concert, wow red house is simply amazing! that song really does have feeling, you can tell it comes from his emotions and not simply a bunch of scales mixed up and put together, hendrix is my favouritee because he was so original at the time, and is still original thesedays...ish! he had more emoton than most players around now and then!

I do agree with you on the little wing thing aswell, srv's version is bloody amazin!

I always wonder, why do the greats always die, Jimi, srv, Elvis (not in my opinion but so its said) jonh lennon, blah blah.

I know this has been said a million times, but would hendrix have seen so great if he was still alive?

I think yes, but not as biug as he his, i see him to be like jimmy page...if ya get me!?

he wouldnt be as popular. ive read biographys on him and he has this really weird future, of making big orchestras and stuff. he died after only 3 or 4 records which were unbelievable. i think most peoples first records are their best and than it goes down hill. he might have been that way and lost his greatness. if he was still alive he wouldve had to not take as many drugs which means his music may have been less interesting. but he is my favorite along with mr srv.

There's a song by Curtis Knight (for whom Jimi played guitar in the early 60s) called "The Ballad of Jimi" which is about an incident where Hendrix supposedly prophesised his own death circa 1970! weird huh?!

thats cool... i think if jimi hadnt dies so young, he would fill the definition of "best guitarist." but we could say the same about other guitarists too...

correct me if i am misinterpreting what you said, but, wasnt charlie christian the first electric guitarist? maybe i'd have to read the article over again(from Guitar World), but as i remember it said that he was the "king of electric guitar" or something, and it had quotes from lots of artists that say christian was their favorite, etc..

;)

i dont think they mean he was the first to use an electric guitar, but he revolutionized it. thats how i would interpret it.

What i love about hendrix is the fact that his music just knew no boundaries. He took the listener out of this world ( you have to listen to his live stuff to know what im talking about)

I dunno where his inspiration came from (some say drugs) but all i know is that listening to Jimi gives me a window into a worldd ill never know. A ****ing crazy psychadelic world! Jimis guitar playing sounds like its that of a guy with a wild imagination.

And of course the emotion. i very much like his version of 'its too bad' for blues, and machine gun has to be one off thee most emotional rock compostitions ever.

Also Jimi could jam like no-one else. No two versions of his songs are the same. Jimi didnt write riffs, he wrote songs and the guitar parts came straight from Jimis crazy soul as he played them. listen to Stone free live. He always seemed to use that song as a launch pad for some awesome, randoom jammming, while coming back to the song in the end.

Bottom Line, you listen to Jimi live, and you let him take you into his world. Then you will know why he is the best.
