Numbers in parentheses can mean any number of things...it just depends on the context.
1. It could mean a ghost note. This is a note that is played very softly......it is felt more than heard.
2. It could be an optional note. There might be a section of the song that is repeated.....and sometimes you will play the note in parentheses, and other times you will not.
3. Shows how far you bend a note......in the example below you will bend the note on the 3rd string, 7th fret until it sounds like the 9th fret.
E:-----------
B:-----------
G:----7b(9)--
D:-----------
A:-----------
E:-----------
4. If you are looking at a tab in a magazine or published book....it might mean that the note is tied. You will not play the note in parentheses, it is just held over from the previous note. You have to look at the standard notation for clues as to what the parentheses means in this case.
Be sure and check out the lesson on how to read Internet tablature here at Cyberfret.com.

HI EVERYONE, I'M AM NEW TO THIS SIGHT, AND MY FISRT QUESTION IS:
DOES ANYONE KNOW A GOOD SIGHT TO FIND OUT HOW TO PLAY SOME OF THE HARDER METALLICA, SLAYER, OR PANTERA SOLOS? I KNOW WHERE TO FIND TABS, BUT I NEED SOMEWHERE TO GIVE AN IN DEPTH EXPLANATION ON WHAT EXACTLY THEY DO WHEN THEY PLAY SOME OF THE CRAZZIER RIFFS.

well what they do when they play those 'Crazier Riffs' or solos is they use various techniques, like in ALL solo's. These include tremolo picking, sweep picking, alternate picking, and possibly economy picking.
Learn these techniques and the solos will come easier. And if you find that the solo's not sounding exactly right, go out and buy the tab book.
