How to play melody and fingerpicking the same time

Hey everybody! I've played guitar for two years, mostly just basic stuff; but a while ago I've heard my friend played pretty simple song (doesnt'matter what) , but somehow he played fingerpicking mixed with the melody (I mean that it seemed that guitar was singing and playing the same time). Do you know how in a world did it happen? Any idears will be great

I have some great help from some members of this forum....answering questions, and helping people out here....Thank You!! :) Also, Jamey Andreas contributes the articles in the Power Practicing section. But it is mostly me writing lessons, webmaster, ....and trying to hold things together here at Cyberfret.com.......and some days that is not an easy task :)
