Thats a hard question! But here's my opinion.

"sooner or later you'll be a he-man woman hater, its inevitable..." hell yeah biatch. :)

I'd have say my fav solo is probably.....ummmm. "dressed to kill" by symphony x. There are so many good ones, i can't really decide though.

Stairway is a damn good solo, but I think a lot of people overlook "Celebration Day" and "Black Dog", which are very fine Jimmy Page solos.

I love Black Magic Woman by Santana also.
Kid Charlemagne by Steely Dan, Crazy Train, Freebird, so many good ones.

I think for irony and cleverness, as well as sheer impact, Hendrix's Star Spangled Banner is one of the very best.

Listen to Testament's "Over the Wall" ex heavy metal guitarist Alex Skolnik (Alex Skolnick.com Testamentlegions.com) now jazz guitarist...has an amazing solo in that song. I listen to it and it is really moodsetting. Makes you really want to pick up your guitar and grind the F@ck out of it.

punisher
01-18-2003, 12:51 AM
Okay, i'll add some.
Stairway to heaven: Zepplin
John b. Good: Chuck berry
Joe satriani solos are the best.
There are so many yet all i was truely looking for was opinion. It's not about speed it's about how the solo is in relation to the song how well it fits. That makes a great solo.

Yeah. I agree. It rocks. :D

I also have a (wierd ??) penchant for Gary Moore's Parisienne Walkways. Don't know why, it's not that it's real fast or anything, I just like it. Great to chill out to.

It would probably have to be one that most anybody old young
musicians non musicians would instantly reply.
That would be between
Stairway to heaven

hotel california

I dont have a personal best it just depends on my mood.
but rubina by satch to me is just so moving and fits that song like a glove.

i have to vote for freebird by skynyrd. it may not be a crazy fast or technical solo, but its got more feel and emotion than any other song i have ever heard and it just plain rocks! i wouldnt base this decision upon techinical skills because then people like malmsteen would be called the best and while they can play fast hard stuff, it doesnt grab you like a real good solo does.

Yeah, only joking of course - I listened to it once to see what all the fuss was about, but I still just can't get into heavy metal (or whatever you guys call it). Each to their own.

I don't even know why I'm in this thread. Solo's have never really interested me. I'm not one of these punk, burned-out kids, but appreciate avante-garde playing styles. I think the only reason I play some of the harder solos I know (few and far between) is to be able to show off when I'm asked to. I never include any difficult lead parts in my original work. Some lead is there, but nothing a 6 month guitar player couldn't play. I guess it's cause I value the feeling that comes from a song, rather than the challenge it prevents.

Nevertheless, here are my picks for favorite solos:

A Perfect Circle - Orestes
Alice in Chains - No Excuses
Black Sabbath - Children of the Grave
Incubus - Deep Inside
Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven
Led Zeppelin - Achilles Last Stand
Led Zeppelin - Whole Lotta Love
Metallica - Battery
Pantera - Cemetary Gates

Anyway:

Wow, tough choice.

Let's see..... anything Randy Rhoads is at the top(RIP).

Ummm, Stairway to Heaven of course.

You Shook Me All Night Long and Back in Black are two of my faves.

Free Bird!
And there are probably lots of others, butI'm barerly awake at the moment

Its got to be Gary Moores second wah-wah solo from 'Like Angels'. Gets the goosebumps going every time. Either that or Brian Robertson 'Still in Love with You' solo off 'Thin Lizzy - Live and Dangerous'. Fantastic!!

I know im dragging this thread up again but I must mention a few solos no one else has...

AC/DC - Night Prowler
AC/DC - Back in Black
Led Zeppelin - Heartbreaker

(if you ask me, Night Prolwer is one of AC/DC's best songs (along with Ride On & Whole Lotta Rosie), the whole of it gives you that chill factor and especially the spine chilling solo!)

/edit

Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody...how can we forget good ol Brian May solos :P

Metallica - Hit The Lights (solo at end of song)
Iron Maiden - Somewhere In Time (solo in middle of song)
Judas Priest - Between The Hammer & The Anvil (solo in middle of song)
Gammaray - Heavy Metal Universe (solo in middle of song)

Hmmmm, that's all that come to mind at the moment.

Five to One by Robby Krieger is a pretty nice solo, that guy is the king of bottleneck.

Hotel California though is the clear champion of solos.

Speed Metal Symphony is not by Steve Vai. Don't trust anything when downloading that says Steve Vai or Malmsteen or Satch on it. Jason Becker is the man you're looking for.

Steely Dan "My Old School"
B.O.C. "Burning For You"
Kansas "Carry On Wayward Son"
Deep Purple "Knocking At Your Backdoor"

Tony MacAlpine's "Tears Of Sahara" where he and George Lynch trade solos is really nice.

Any Alex Lifeson solo
Any Yngwie solo

It not really a solo, but if you've ever tried to learn Reelin in the years by Steely Dan you'll realize that Walter Becker is a wail of a talent.
Wait=White Lion,Vito rocks
Cliffs Of Dover=Eric Johnson
Love Song=Tesla
(intro is great)
Peace Pipe= Cry Of Love
Vodo Chile=Stevie Ray Vaughn
And if you've never heard of Justin King-Knock on wood (http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/video/guitar.php) check this out. It's worth the download.

solo single by itself, so any guitar riff that is a part from teh rest of the song can be considered a solo. so there are plenty of songs without "solos" that have solos... if ya knwo what i mean
