I was playing my acoustic today (my new Ovation..love it!) and I was getting into it pretty good. I was just improvising, but I was on a serious roll. Lots of standard chords, but I tossed in a few minors and 7ths and sus4's and some hella-cool strumming technique and the occasional cool filler lead riff or two. When I got done, I looked down at the guitar and saw that I had broken the second string. I don't remember breaking it, and I didn't break it on the final strum. I simply hadn't realised when I had broken it. My strumming started getting heavy about half way through the improve until the end, so it had to be sometime between then and the end. I surprised myself with that one. I was like. "Well...son of a bitch."

I can't see how that's possible....whenever I break a string it scares the crap out of me. How you could not notice it and keep playing without feeling it at all is beyond me...

That seems bizarre, I love it though when you're in the zone and nothing matters.

I don't think there's much in this world to beat that feeling of improvising well, sadly I've not been able to do it for lack of creativity for quite a while now. Although I've got the flu which is probably part of the reason.

@swamp donkey, it's not that hard to believe, most of the time my eyes are shut so I probably wouldn't notice either, not unless it flew up and whipped me in the face or something.

But wouldn't you notice it was missing if you tried to play it?? Whether you're strumming or picking, you should be able to feel that there's a string missing. I guess it is possible though...

I was playing mostly chords, so I guess that is why I didn't notice until I was finished. If I had tried playing a riff on that string, then yes, I know I would have noticed.

And it broke at the bridge, where mine always seems to break.

there is actually a scientific reason for this:

when you become totally relaxed or are playing a song which you know very well or doing something you're totally used to, your brain switches to theta brain waves, which draw upon your unconscious, this is why you could just go on playing perfectly well and not be conscious of the broken string.
