After your very helpful advice (all the people on this forum) I went out and bought an acoustic steel stringed guitar. It was in the average price range but it sounds amazing, and it was a bargain with a pickup already installed. Anyway, I've been playing for a night and a day, and my fingers are hurting so damn much. I measured the action on my strings and it is at 0.5cm (0.195") at the 12th fret open.
Holding down the string at the 1st fret and the 15th fret, the 7th fret action is at 0.2cm (0.078"). Are these values good for the action, cause my fingers are killing me! If not, will changing the strting gauge help?

Thanks a lot

youve just gotta keep playing and taking the pain...
eventually the ends of your fingers will become tougher, and you wont even feel it...

Does sound a bit high to me, but i prefer a low action. Also 2mm at the 7th fret is *way* more than mine, is the neck warped? is the guitar new or second hand? If your really struggling take it back to the shop and get them to check it out and set it up for you, the way you want.

Lighter gauge strings will help.
