picking technique?

I need some help on this picking technique that one of my favorite guitarists Marty Friedman from Megadeth uses a lot in his solos.

he does it like u would in a sweep but i dont understand how you are supposed to do this(or any sweep) fast without making the notes ring together or without killing them with a mute when your using heavy distortion?
Any help would be nice
