I'd like to know, which guitar riffs are the best, in you opinion, of course. I'll start with my list:

AC/DC - Highway To Hell

Led Zeppelin - Heartbreaker

Lenny Kravitz - Are You Gonna Go My Way

Deep Purple - Smoke On The Water (there isn't a guitar player out there, who doesn't know this one)

It will be probably useful to you to know, that these aren't necessarily my favourite songs - they are just based on riffs that are brilliant (in my opinion, of course).

Hmm... Nightrain, Back In Black.
Guys, I must say, you don't dissapoint me!
Sweet Child O' Mine is great too.
Another thing: could anyone explain to me how to play the rythm for Nightrain? I just don't get it. I don't mean the intro riff, but the rythm, played while Axl is singing. If you know it, either post a massage or e-mail me, or you can even PM me.
Thanks!

smfulla

depends on the style
For classical style its usually Romanza

In my humble opinion,Metallica write the best riffs:)

smfulla
12-08-2001, 11:22 PM
Black Sabbath (2 b's or 1?) wrote/write awesome riffs as well. So do Diamond Head and Motörhead. Admitadly I have only been introduced to them through metallica =] But they're cool.
Slayer write good riffs aswell. IMO.

Phil
12-10-2001, 02:06 PM
Newguy, i don't think they are "designated" songs but they do seem to be a popular choice. Seems to me they are popular because altho they have resonably easy riffs some section of them help you in a positive way, e.g. with you speed or power chord technique. Plus they sound very cool and give a quick sence of have accomplishment, which is very important in keeping a new player interested. Work hard on them, because you'll be amazed at how impressed people will be with you when you grab a guitar and play Sandman, it sounds impressive for an easy song. Got something to do with that killer chorus i think :D

And yes, I agree with slaughteredsoul, Metallica write the best riffs :)

are you talkimg about solo's here?

like, that insrumental part about 3/4 of the way through a song.

or the intro?

anyway- someone mentioned the La's, 'there she goes' intro. i like that too!

the Final countdown by Europe has a good solo

also Queen- a kind of magic.

ive never been a Metallica fan myself, just not a fan of the style i suppose.

i prefer the simple but meaningful riffery of Mr Kurt Cobain personally.

although alot of Jimi and REM songs have some on the best riffs ever

"average" as in: Excellent-good-average -bad? It's all a matter of opinion,i don't expect the whole world to be die-hard Metallica fans.

Yes Iommi! I'm not the only one who listens to DIO!! What grade are you in? I'm in 8th and my fave bands are Dio Iron maiden, Metallica and Ozzy. My friends are like you have to listen to Smashing Pumpkins(can't stand them) and Misfits (OK band). I will ask some skaterboarder kids if they've ever head of Dio and they're like, "No, but he's probably poser, like you!!!"

Long live DIO!!!!!!!

RJD's the man. I'm in 12th grade. my fav bands are DIO, Black Sabbath, Gamma Ray, Iron Maiden, Ozzy, Hammerfall, and i think Steel Prophet is sounding better all the time ;p
Why do you even bother asking skateboard kids anyway? ;p
Do you listen to any of Ronnie Dio's other bands? like his stuff in Black Sabbath and Rainbow (It sounds frooty, i know, but 'Kill the King' is an awesome song).

newguy

I ask skateboarder kids because they seem to be only ones who listin to rock but i soon found out they like nu metal (slipknot, sum41) and all that crap. And just earlier today on the classic rock radio channel i heard "Man on the silver mountain" from Ronnie when he was with rainbow which was kick ass!

This could be a long list, so I'll limit it to ten, in no particular order:
Hendrix: All along the Watchtower
G-N-R : Sweet child o' Mine
Rush: 2112 soliloquy
Rush: La Villa Strangiato
Pink Floyd: Comfortably Numb (especially live)
Pink Floyd: Shine on, you crazy Diamond (I, II, III)
Mick Ronson (David Bowie): Moonage Daydream
Blackfoot: Highway song
Van Halen: Hot for teacher
Zeppelin: Stairway to Heaven
Not a whole lot of surprises here, but remember:
Quotes from Shakespeare become cliche's, but that doesn't make Shakespeare one.
